Ecoboost vs v8 dosnt really matter as far as towing. Only in gas mileage. So not worth the extra 1500 the engine costs over the 5.0. Go big or go home, get a 6.2

Get a diesel. I started out with a 16' open trailer. 1500 truck was just fine. But as soon as you start doing weekend events you're gonna want a enclosed trailer. Prices are good right now for a decent enclosed for under $6k, get a older power stroke or cummins dedicated for tow duty and you're set. But diesels keep value something fierce, you can get away with a 2wd, I need a 4wd in CO.

dont mean to be an ass, but are you high? Ever tow anything bigger than a jet ski? Boost is where it's at. My Dodge in in boost from 10-30psi when a trailer is loaded behind it. I know gas will be a little different, but I bet towing you're in the boost with that 150 for the whole drive.

Yea diesel is the way to go for towing . Like rich said get a older power stroke or cummins. It will last you a long time if you take care of it . I wouldn't have it any other way .

12 valve for the win, However, that thing's got a 3V 5.4,and I’ve replaced a lot of those at the shop. It's not worth diving into, but long story short, they lose oil pressure on the top end due to defective CCT's,which will toss a VCT code, and make em clickity clack at idle. Early 5.0's(10's-11's) have cylinder bore issues, and the ecoboost you need to beat the hell out of to get it moving in a truck that size.

Ha.. I already have the diesel fools... I was tryin to help this guy out if he's looking for a new truck. But shit honestly if you just do a intake tune exhaust that ecoboost will pull a freakin house down.

Me personally I'd rather have a super duty, but if your looking for an F150 to tow with.. Get the ecoboost. THAT WAS THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE

Not taking it personally Rich. I do tow a lot of different things with the current truck I have.......a 1993 Ranger with the 4.0, including a few cars to the demo derbys.....no problem. When it comes to towing, it is more about torque and gear ratios than anything else, hence why a diesel will always be the better choice.

Hp tq numbers of all the engines discussed in this thread:

360 @ 5500 rpm (5.0L V8) 380 @ 4250 rpm (5.0L V8) tows up to 9600lbs with 3.73 gears (4.10 option not available)

365 @ 5000 rpm (3.5L EcoBoostÂ®) 420 @ 2500 rpm (3.5L EcoBoostÂ®) Tows up to 11,300 lbs with the 4.10 gear ratio

411 @ 5500 rpm (6.2L V8) 434 @ 4500 rpm (6.2L V8) Tows up to 11,300 with the 3.73 gear ratio (4.10 gear ratio not available except for the svt raptor. Towing of the raptor is 8,000 because you cannot get the max trailer tow package)

Put 4.10's in the 5.0 and the towing abilities will be on par with the ecoboost engine. The 5 horses and 40ft pounds of torque might mean the difference of 150-200 lbs of weight.....

Dont get me wrong, the Ecoboost is a fantastic engine, with the fact that it gives you the abilities of a v8 with better fuel economy.

Even the new 6.7 powerstroke is a great engine.....it has been out for about two years now and I have yet to see one come in for anything more than routine service.....cant say the same about the first two years of the 6.0 powerstroke.

And burn out the transmission. I have been seeing a few of them come in that were obviously tuned.

Like I said, I do it with my 93 ranger with no issues. It is more for pulling heavy loads a long distance, like over 100+ miles

I'm agreeing with you on this whole matter. My dad pretty much built our whole house using our old 90's ranger to haul the materials. We now have lots of pickups for our construction company, but they pull much bigger things lol...
