sorry its so long but please read, just wanted to be thorough enough so you guys would understand

well there was this really strange noise that i have been hearing in my car and it started about a week ago. its really hard to explain. id like to say it sounds like shaking a spray paint can but with more of a scatching noise, not so much a clanking noise. it sounded like it was coming from the front right area of my car, so i checked the brakes first, and found a pieice of sheet metal, brake guard im assuming, and it was been in towards the caliper. so i took it off yet it still made the noise. so i had a buddy of mine drive next to me. and he said it sounded like it was coming from the rear. so i checked to rear brakes, good. then jacked the car up and looked at the differential case and at the bottom was a thin line of transmission fluid. not leaking or pouring out, just a little around the edge. then i traced the driveshaft forward to the transmission case and where the driveshaft arm connects into the transmission, was a little more fluid. more than what was coming out of the differential. so i left it alone to think for a while and came back to about a dime sized drop of fluid on the ground(over about 5 hours), nothing major. so i asked my bro and he said the rear end could be going out??? elaborate please. and then asked another buddy at work, and he said it could be the bearings or the seals in the case. any other thoughts or suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated.

*another side note* it only makes the noise when the car is in gear and in motion, not when im idiling or when the clutch is engaged

thanks for all the help in advance,
tj

i think your headed in the right direction with it as far as the rear differental or possibly just axle bearings, but i would also take a look at the u joints.

thanks for the help. somedays it makes the noise and somedays it doesnt at all. which is weird. like today it didnt even make a squeek. but other days can be horrible. so that makes me think that it may not be the bearing/differential cuz it would seem like that would be a more constant/consistant noise.

*the noise will also speed up/slow down with the car. more revs/speed=faster the sound, less revs/speed=slower the sound*

any other help will be greatly appreciated and thanks for the comments so far. i would like to get this taken care of asap

bearings can cause and off and on noise as the rollers move around inside of the assembly

Although its hard to give you a good idea from just reading something instead of being there I will give you a little input on what I think it is.

To me by the sounds you described it sounds like your car is pinging. As in the air/fuel in your cylinders, is combusting before it should. This could be from too much timing, bad gas, not high enough octane, car running hot, just it being very warm outside in general and so on and so on. This is not good and needs to be fixed soon if it is in fact the problem.

Now obviously this would not be coming from the rear but then again driving down the road listening to noise is not the easiest to trace to the point of origin.

When this happens are you giving it decent throttle or is the engine under load like its going up a hill? Or is it just when you are cruising?

Just one more thing to check is the exhaust. the pipes could be rubbing on the frame, fuel tank, drive shaft. mine is doing it and i need to put it back on the ramps and adj as necessary. it only makes the noise sometimes. have you been messing around in an area and then it started or did it start out of the blue. does the noise change with rpm or speed

thanks for the replies so far.

as far as the air/fuel ratio goes, i highly doubt its that. cuz its no where near a pinging noise. more like a scratching-ish(hard to describe) noise. but thanks for the advice.

i was thinking it could be the exhaust too, but i checked all the hangers and brackets and everything looks alright.

im deffinitely starting to think it is the bearings, it just seems like the noise bearing would make if they were all torn up if you kno what i mean. cuz it so inconsistant.

but for the past couple days(2-3) it has HARDLY even made any noise at all. which is very strange. but a week ago, when it started, it was just horrible. so it just leaves me clueless

so, whenever i get the money i guess im just going to take it to a local hobby shop and get it checked out or just take it to my brothers shop

once again. thanks for all they help guys. i knew i could come here for some great advice

is your car a Manual or Auto? It could possible be something up near your clutch. Does it make the noise at a stop while in gear? maybe you just need a tranny flush, I had some gear rollover noise in my T56 but it would only do it while in neutral. and some Synchromesh cleaned it up real quick
