I have no idea what the heck is going on! About two weeks ago I noticed the belt over the lip of the smog pump pulley so I fixed that. Then Friday, i totally disintegrated the belt and took out the stupid plastic idler pulley. So I put a new idler pulley and belt on and everything seemed fine. This morning however, not so much. Went to start the car, heard a weird noise so I shut it down, and once again the belt is jumping the smog pulley! All the pulleys look to be lined up but I noticed the belt rides toward the outer portion of the water pump pulley. I don't think I put the smog pulley on backwards when I put the car together, but I'll have to check tonight. Only other thing I can think of is the tensioner is going bad after 204,000 miles. Anybody have any other ideas?

Have you spun everything round with the belt off to see if there's too much resistance or play in any of the pulleys?
Could be the tensioner itself, that would cause exactly what your describing.
As well as tensioners failing the smog pumps are known for locking up too, well done on the 204k btw thats a lot of miles.

I would direct my attention at the smog pump and tensioner.

The pully may be lined up but if its bent or if the bearings are creating a wobble, Could throw the belt off.

I would also look at the Tensioner and also do you use your AC does it work?? Your Ac compressor could have seized up also causing a shredded belt.

ya pull the belt off the car and see if the pulleys are free wheelin. I had the smog seize on my car but it seized so bad it snapped the belt it about 2seconds.

I had a similar problem. If the pulleys aren't properly aligned, it'll throw the belt. At 30+ a belt, it gets old fast.

Well I got a short belt (90.5) and got the car running again, but I noticed the tensioner moving a lot, especially as the idle surges you can see it jump. This does not seem normal to me. I would figure a little bit of movement but it seems a little excessive. Is the tensioner just bad? It does have 204,000 miles on it.
