Ok today I pulled into the gas station to fill up my tank. My gauge was reading a E on empty. I went to fill it up and noticed gas pouring underneath the car at around 12 gallons. Here is a video I took with my cell phone after I shut the gas pump down at 12 gallons of gas.

I pulled drove it over to level ground and it stopped leaking. So I took it back home across the street and jacked it up to see whats going on. Looks like I need a new seal right? Right now I have a full tank of gas and I dont want to drive it anywhere in case it hits my exahaust and catches fire!

Here is where it is leaking

Buy a new gas tank grommet and install it. It's a few bucks at the parts store.

Paul.

Do I need to go to the dealer to get the seal? I just called all the auto parts stores in my area and they dont have a seal or gromet for my gas tank.

Do you think with half a tank of gas or less It wont leak? It's my daily driver and I need to get to work tomorrow. I probably wont have time to fix it until next weekend.

I'm thinking about letting the car idle for a couple hours to get the gas level down before tomorrow.

Drive it around I highly doubt it will catch fire. Yes dealer. Get the gas below the seal pull the filler tube no need to drop the tank 30min tops about 7 screws.

easy fix. mine was leaking because it had split around where its thin around the tank and only leaked when full or if i made a hard left turn.

put the jack under the middle of the tank, remove the screws inside the gas door, take the strap completely loose on the right side, 1/2 way loose on the left side, slowly lower the tank.
I bought a new seal from john's mustang for less than $15. put some grease on the seal when you put it back together. pay attention when you remove the old one or it could tear in 1/2 and fall in the tank.

You will have to get the grommet from your local ford dealer, not expensive either so it won't break the bank. Drive the car around until you get it down to 1/4 tank, it won't catch fire so you're ok. I had the same issue with my car when I first bought it, drove around like that for the first 3 wks, I just would not fill it up past 1/2 tank.

I had this happen to me in the winter about 2 years ago, took a hard right turn then parked saw gasoline all over the ground. I had no idea that it was a 2 piece tank, I thought about JB welding it but did some research first and found that it needs a grommet. I bought mine online from some ford dealership. It was only like 10 bucks. These things have maybe 10-20 year life on them.

My friend dropped the whole tank disconnected the lines and replaced it.

Either way, LRS carries them as well.

The exact thing happened to me when I bought mine. The dealer never fills past 1/4. So when I filled it up with 93, it went everywhere....very
embarassing. But, I just ordered one from LRS, and popped her in.
