I recently bought a freshly rebuilt 306 with forged pistons and edelbrock rpm's to go on top - 60cc comb. chambers 202 int 16 exh. the block and heads looked good and i got an edelbrock 7364 head gasket kit to put them together. and after all is said and done when the engine warms up i get a steady drip from both sides between the gasket and block/head. i used arp studs and 7/16-20, 12 sided nuts. i torqued them in sequence to 65 lbs and then on to 70 lbs. i know that is stock specs but are aluminum heads different??? What did I do wrong? Why is it leaking?

No... I didnt use anything on the lower studs. that sounds like a likely cause because my oil is clean. so if i loosen everything, seal the studs. the torque everything in sequence ... that will eliminate that possible cause, correct?

drain out your coolant by removing the block plugs, and remove the studs one at a time. that way you stand less of a chance of compromising the seal of the head gasket

lafenatu, do you think the leak is at the studs without sealant and i need new head gaskets because i am breaking the seal, or are you saying that the leak may be in the head gasket?

both sides as in driver side and passenger side - not intake/exhaust side. it leaks right at the studs - the thing that confuses me is that i have done this more than once without sealing stock bolts on stock heads. do the stud and aluminum head combo require this sealant on the stud that much that it leaks?? the aluminum heads are new territory for me right now; it sucks that i have to redo this after i have everything put together on a combo that runs as good as it does for a few drops of coolant. although i would rather do it right.

I would try one bolt at a time, and will take a minimum amount of time, if it still leaks do the whole job again
