Loud Ticking noise... WTF? Help!

I have a 95 Cobra, and up until recently ive noticed this weird ticking noise. Sounds like a loud lifter tick. Although, it only makes the noise when under medium-hard acceleration. As soon as the rpms level out, the noise stops. It sounds like its coming from the rear of the engine, because I can hear it inside the car. Anyone have any ideas?

I dont know if this has anything to do with it, but it has a starting problem as well. If it sits for too long... (over 24hrs or more) it wont start, unless given starting fluid through the intake. I think it could possibly be a bad FPR or a bad fuel pump, but I can hear the pump kick on when the key is turned to "on". Maybe the lack of fuel is causing the engine to tick the way it does? It seems a little sluggish on the acceleration as well...

Hopefully someone can help me out. Its really aggrivating.

what fuel do you use and whats your time set at ?

First thing might want to change the fuel filter. There are many things i would do to knock out ideas i thought were wrong with it. i would swap out the plugs and check each of them to see if maybe a cyl was misfiring. I would check my dist cap and rotor button. Check my timing. check my air filter to see if it was dirty. Clean my MAF and my IAC . Clogged cats can be causing your sluggish acceleration. I would check the fuel pressure to see what it is at idle and with the vac off.

There are many things i would do to knock out ideas i thought were wrong with it.

Changed plugs and wires... all looked good.


I would check my dist cap and rotor button.
New cap and rotor.

Check my timing.
Hmmm... Never done that before.

check my air filter to see if it was dirty.
New CAI. Fresh filter.

Clean my MAF and my IAC .
Done less than 500 miles ago.

Clogged cats can be causing your sluggish acceleration.
No Cats.

I would check the fuel pressure to see what it is at idle and with the vac off.
I think thats going to be what needs to be done. I think Fuel pressure is off.

Its the timing and the cheap gas you maybe using.

Well if the fuel pressure is off it could be a bad pump or FPR.... if you have never checked your timing you might have a bad harmonic balancer....

the loud ticking could also be loose header bolts or a gasket going out. as far as not wanting to start do all of the above(full blown tune-up) also any codes. do all of the cheap and easy stuff first before you start throwing parts at it

I always run 87 with the occasional tank of 93 every 6 or 7 tanks. Our cars were designed to run on 87 though. Although with this ethanol in the gas i think i saw a study on it and supposedly they only do 10%. I think i saw a study saying more towards 12% is being found in the majority.

True about the headers being loose. Are they stock headers ????

I had the same problem on my 94 it was the cheap 87 gas and the timing.

I do run 87 gas... Maybe ill try some 93 when im empty. I have to go and have some codes pulled. Im sure there is a shitload of them.

Would a bad fuel pump throw a code?

don't think so . Also what kinda gas mileage do you get ??? Your O2 sensors could be bad do you ever smell gas???

I get absolutley terrible gas mileage. Honestly... 30 miles, will eat up 1/4 tank. And if it drops below 1/4... it has a harder time starting as well...

ouch, that is bad news. First off go see if its pulling codes at all, try running some 93 through it and see if that helps. if you have a bad 02 sensor and it goes for to long it can cause quite a efw problems, fouled plugs, clogged cats etc so if its pulling codes and its an 02 sensor you may as well change your plugs. hope everything works out man

Well you could have a bad pump... has it ever been changed ??? How many miles are on the car??? Your sock could be clogged on your pump. Oh wait sorry that's the old school way of saying it as the guy at Advance told me ( he was a smart ass)

I just actually bought the car, so im not too sure of its history. I can tell you this... the fuel filter looks like it was NEVER changed. So clogged, it wouldnt barely even run out when tipped over. So my guess, no way in hell the guy ever changed the pump.

only at 10 degrees....soon as you bump the timing up you need more octaine
