metal sliding over metal?

Hey folks.

I'm looking for some advice. Recently when I put the car into drive or reverse, and then accelerate I hear what I'd describe as metal slipping over metal. As I increase acceleration, it increases the slipping noise, until, if I get it up past say... 45, I don't really hear it that much anymore. Now sometimes I'll put it into drive and accelerate and I won't hear anything, but I think its getting worse. I do have a couple issues with my car that I've known about before this... I believe my u-joints are going bad (For some time now, I've heard a slight knock if I hit the brakes too hard), and my gears need replaced because of gear whine I've experienced ever since a pal put my 4.10s in a few years back.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Naw, that's only in Drive. I don't live near any salt flats where I could get it to 45 in reverse :D

By the way... metal slipping over metal may not be as accurate a description as I can get. If you're not paying that much attention to it, it sounds like a metallic ringing sound. Almost like a tailpipe being dragged on the ground, but what makes me think metal on metal is that once you accelerate or decelerate you can hear whatever it is spinning up and then spinning down.

Eh. Maybe I just need to hang a recorder out the window and drive under a bridge...

Sooo... I tried, but could never get a good recording of the grinding noise. Looking around the interwebs, it looks like others are having a similar sounding issue with the drive shaft rubbing on the e-brake cable bracket. Does anyone think this potentially sounds like my issue as well?

it very well could be, my driveshaft showed signs of wear because of the e-brake, which isn't in my car any more, but I have heard of this happening to a lot of people, is your car lowered?

Yes it is lowered.

I used to hear a lot of noise when I had passengers, but thought I fixed it when I replaced my front lower A-arms and had the front isolators reinstalled. The sound I'm hearing now may have been the same noise I heard then, but now its doing it whether I have passengers or not. I'm thinking I may have taken care of one issue (squeaking ball joints), but never actually took care of the other issue.

take a look at your drive shaft, if it has a shinny ring around it then that means it is rubbing, if thats the case, take your drive shaft out grind the e-brake braket down a little and put it back in.

Well, just giving an update. Turns out that the rubbing noise I heard had something to do with a rear caliper rubbing the rotor. I guess one of the caliper bolts busted loose somehow. I didn't get specifics as you can tell. I'm just glad that issue is fixed. It was driving me nuts. Basically I had the pads and rotors replaced. Cost about $230 with labor. Kinda kicking myself for not investigating the issue closer and seeing if I could fix it myself. Ohwell. Next time.
