Well seeing as I have about two more weeks before I license the car for the summer, thought I would tackle re-gearing the car today.Climbed under the car and rechecked the tag yup 3.08s, 3.73's should make a difference.Seeing as I have no air at home right now, removed the shaft then the pinion nut while I could still use the E brake to keep the axles from turning, good plan and everything went really smoothly. Now I marked the caps and removed the carrier and set aside for now. Since I had the rag in hand thought I would look and see the condition of the gears after 185000 KM's, gee they look to be in great shape kind of surprised me with that many K but this is good right? Well during this inspection I came across the ford markings and guess what I found, yup you got it 3.73. To say I was pissed is an understatement. Who puts the 3.08 tag back on the diff after re-gearing? Oh well my bad can only blame myself for my own stupidity, should have checked first but hate pulling something down without having all the parts I need to put it back together again right there in front of me.The moral of this story is trust nothing at face value, should know that at my age. This is not a total loss, I can now rebuild my tracloc as I now have no reason to put it off any longer, (and it's out staring me in the face) just not today as I don't seem to be in the mood right now (is this how a woman feels?). If this story lightens someone else's day this is also a good thing, live and learn ( again and again and again.........) :angry7:

Lol I actually swiped the 3.73 tag off an explorer rear end and put it on my diffy just so that if I do ever sell(not likely) the next person will know. The feeling between a 3.08 and 3.73 is pretty big though, how didn't you know? first gear is rather short with 3.73s vs. the factory 2.73s I had.

I have never driven a mustang before, all the numbers for the car call for 3.08 ( door tag and diff tag ).I bought my car as a write off last fall for a parts car for my Pinto,(302, c6 ) wanted injection and a 5-speed. I put 5000Km on in three months but coming straight out of my Pinto my Mustang still felt slow.so it never occurred to me it wasn't still 3.08.The car came with 215 55 16's on it and I blamed the speedo being off on them, it' off by about 5%. Now I understand why you all say these cars are slow from the factory new it must have really been a slug. Doesn't feel too bad now but is definitely no powerhouse. Still need to check the speedo gears and see what they've done there, new set are sitting on the bench ( 6 tooth drive and 18 tooth driven ) so I'm good no matter what I find now.Like I said like to have all my ducks in a row before I begin a project, just made a newbie mistake this time, should have known to check first.
