I have decided to upgrade my radar detector really only because I got a good deal from a friend on a escort 9500ci. I have always been happy with the whistler I had but after selling 9500's price was just too nice to pass up. For those of you not familiar with it this has been called the #1 detector/shifter out by the experts and yes it beat the V1 too. It has front/rear laser shifters to keep me off the lidar, a GPS feature with a database of photo radar areas and popular speed traps that I can also add to when I drive by and see one. Finally the coolest feature is that the GPS will recognize when you are moving less the 15 mph and disable all the alerts so that it isn't blowing up as you pull into the grocery store or strip mall. For those of you that are familiar with it I got it for much less then the $1200 retail price so why not?

Ok now this is where I need your help, I can't decide, My original idea was to just mount the new display in the clock pod like the old one. It is easy enough to do and again the location is great.

After some thought though I decided to make it look similar to the explorer overhead I isntalled to house the Air-ride display. All I mean by that is that the front of the pod would be gloss black and the gloss black and would just flow into the plexi of the display to give a fairly seemless look like below. Both of the overhead and the clock pod will have a green stripe down them as to all the other gloss pieces in the middle.

I was perfectly happy with this until after some reaserch and asking my install friends they turned me onto the idea of mounting the display behind the mirror so it would shine through. I am sure we can all agree that it looks cool, not sure if my clock will look that good... I put a vid in to see it in action skip to 50 secs and you can se the display working.

cool as shit right? see my delima?!??!? I mean in all honesty I like it in the mirror and have a clock pod comming that isn't cut up that I could put back in there but it will take some getting use to it again and I would get the clock back until I hack it up to put something else there.

What do you guys think? in the mirror or in the pod?

i like them both but since you said you already had it in the clock pod i would try the mirror and see how you like it. if you end up not liking it you can always put it in the clock pod

I'm sorry wait a minute, $1200?!

yassir that was not a typo and you didn't read it incorrectly. Now that is the retail price and doesn't include any extra's nor installation. Get the iphone cable, another mount for the radar ant and maybe an extra cable if needed and after install I hear $1500 pats/labor is cheap. Now get it mounted in the mirror, maybe on an convertable import and suddenly $2k is a good deal.

ya gotta pay to play and I have not heard anyone say there is a better unit out now. This one is different from the others with the GPS integrated into it. You can download the maps that already have dedicated photo-radar locations, or if you see one just push the "mark" button on it and now that one is in the database. !/2 mile before you get there it will let you know to slow down.

It will learn false alarms by again compairing its location and signal strength. After it gets 4 false readings in the same area, it will store that location/freq and the next time you drive by it will ignor that signal. Now while it still ignors that signal at that location it will still monitor if a real signal is in the area and let you know.

Finally now this detector is invisable to lidar front/rear as it will shift their signals(jamming is bad word) so that the gun gets an err and doesn't show anything on its reading. FThis is in addtion to being indetectable from teh VG2 or the detector detector. From what I have herd for actually picking up radar signals it is just rediculous how far out it can pick up. It is so fast to recognize signals that pop radar is also not a problem to pick up.

Now of course all of that is null/void if you are the first person he targets that day with radar but again laser no biggie. Yes shifters are legal here I understand that that texas/DC they are illegal. To get around this the default setting for the shifters is off and the customer can activate them if he wants but its at his own risk.

I think I covered it all there. Now would I pay $1200 for it? Not unless I had a bad-ass whip and money to burn but again then go for it but obviously we can all live with out them(ok most of us). I generally am not going fast enough to worry about it but I am sure that there has been times when we were running late an drove a little faster or I just found a nice open road that caught us right.

got out of the klink/cough hospital this after noon and was happy to see the box I was expecting there. Happy to see its all there and test fit the display in the clock pod that also arrived today. This will be just too damn easy to do and if I put it in the mirror I would have a green clock again or need to figure something to mount there.

The pic above is the pod that use to hold the factory clock. Its facing backwards just so I can check the fit. really could not be any easier to float this in. The display is only 5/8" deep so there is plenty of room there. All I will need to do is trim out the blue rectangular shape in the factory pod. From there will just add a few dabs of glue to hold it in place, fill the seams and float it smooth. The goal in the end is to paint the entire front section gloss black so that the display will just blend into the black area.

the mirror is awesome but i'd say the clock pod just so you can see it better. i feel like when you'll want to look at it is when your moving forward not trying to read what it says while looking behind you. i'm thinking the line of sight from the clock pod is probably going to be about the same angle as the side of the road where the fuzzy will be sitting.
