new harmonic balancer and pulleys

Ok, so I finally got around to installing a new harmonic balancer/ crank damper (depending on who you talk to) and underdrive pulleys.

the balancer was alot easier and less time consuming that some people make it out to be. It only took about 2 hours from start to finish and that included adjusting timing.

biggest thing to remember, take out the fan!! makes it alot easier and you wont get a puller in there if you dont.
all it took was a good socket set, beer, harmonic balancer puller, hammer, 4x4, beer, timing light, crow bar, and some beer.

and the pulleys were just as easy, except the alternator pulley. I had to take the alternator out and put it in the trusty vice and use the 24" breaker bar to get the nut off. but other than that, it was relatively easy.

after replacing the harmonic balancer, i found that I was running at 16 deg btdc. ( i had adjustied my timing a little previously using the best guess method) my *factory* balancer rotated on the elastometer and was actually cockeyed. so I reset timing to 14 btdc. and she is running great.

any questions on the specifics, just let me know.

Cool man. I just replaced mine also. Just so you know you can get it off with the fan still on there. Didnt think I could but the I just wiggled the remover bolt between the fan cover and got it off of there with the fan on and everything. Did you use anything to mark your balancer? I always have such a hard time trying to read it.

your puller must be shorter than mine, but good for you if you could fit it in there, i know mine wasnt going in there without taking the fan out.
Yeah. I used a white paint marker to mark the 10 and 14 btdc marks (10 for base and 14 for advanced) worked great, i tried white crayon once, but the marks ended up melting and were unreadable before i got it fine tuned.

Oh ok. I tried using some white paint stuff but it got messy too fast lol. I used a puller from autozone just so ya know? For next time if you need to know so you dont have to take the fan out.

I took the fan out and the reservior tank out to make it easier to move around in there. Just easier that way.

man the pullers you guys are using must suck. Yeah the fan was kinda in the way but I had zero problems with it being there and the balancer came right off. Taking the fan off for me would have just been a waste of time.

Nah i would rather have the room and not possibly have something happen and have to replace the fan sometimes the simple things you do make the biggest difference. I am an Mechanic and thats what i do every time.

i own my own puller and dont plan on buying/borrowing another one anytime soon. but it only takes a few minutes to take the fan out. the puller isnt that bad, the stock bolts that came with it to hold it to whatever you are pulling are REALLY long, made for steering wheels along with balancers i guess.
