I weighed up the cost of doing the diff myself, did'nt fancy it much, its been too long since i did one, so i priced up having gears done in the UK, here's a quote, its in £, just multiply prices by 2 to get it in $.
"We can fit 3.73's for you. That would work out good all round. Labour is between 6-8hrs, we advise that ABS sensors my need to be replace as there is always chance of damage when removing the shafts. The gears are £179.95+vat, Installation kits starts at £38.95+vat this includes shims and seals etc, the next kit up includes new pinion and carrier bearings and then the most expensive kit includes rear shaft/wheel bearings."
"Our labour rates are:
Mechanical £45+vat per hour (10% discount when parts purchased from Adrenaline)
Fabrication £40+vat per hour".
VAT [value added tax] is charged at 17.5%, so 1 hour labour is just short of £53 about $106, so say it takes 6 hours, thats $636, and thats without any parts, btw this place is well known, probably not the cheapest, but there you go.
So i looked at Summit, $782.39 for a complete axle, less half shafts and top bushes, hmmmm.[http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=FMS-M-4006-B373&FROM=MG]
Ok so there's freight and duty to pay, but you can see my thinking, it works out very close, maybe cheaper, but i can do the other stuff myself.
I ordered the correct gearbox speedo gear from steeda, 2 top axle bushes, and it comes with new outer bearings.
What else will i need, [the abs sensors are not rusted in on mine] what grade\type axle oil is everyone running?
I know everyone prefers 4:10, but fuel is $10 per gallon, and i'm hoping one day Santa will bring me a supercharger.
