Hey guys, I just recently bought a 96 Mustang GT. It has a bad motor and I've been reading on engine swapping to a newer 4.6l. I found one cheap out of a 1999 crown vic. I also read that when you do swap over to a newer motor, that it is recommended to hook up a programmer and update the ECU. My question is do you have to get a programmer and update the ECU or can you just swap out the motor and be ready to go?

Everything will swap over exactly. Just drill and tap the manifold for coolant sensor.

Now I'm not 100% sure but doesnt some of the panther platforms in 1999 still have the NPI motor? I know I was told to look for 01 up panther cars and 99 up mustangs. Just a thought.

I thought they changed in 99 on the vics too. Not sure though. Have to do some more research. I wanted a PI, but if it is a NPI I'll be ok with that. Can't complain, got the donor car for cheap. Just ready to get it road worthy and cruise.

I searched some more and found they did started in 2001 in vics. I must have misread.

Bummer, you would have like the extra bump in power. A running car is better than a dead car though!

Yea I know. I would like to have had the PI engine. But happy that I have a running engine. Not planning on keeping this engine in long term. Just want to get it in and start driving it. Lol. Hope the block is still good on the one coming out of the stang. Would like to rebuild it and put better heads and cams on it. And eventually put it back in the mustang

The npi pistons would favor the PI heads a bit more. Gives a bump in compression. PI pistons vary from around 16cc to 18cc. I wanna say the npi pistons are around 11cc dished.
