broken wire? broken gear in the cluster? bad sensor? anyone?

yup. they are notorious for breaking teeth around or after 110k. You can get replacement gears though and its real easy to replace. it just drops right in.

well you can find them just about anywhere online even from ford. I dont think advance has them cause i think i asked them before i ordered mine online. its been a while sice i replaced mine and i cant remember who i bought it from but you can shop around online and find the best price. i think altogether i got mine for 24 shipped so its not to bad i guess for a piece of plastic

^^^^^^ yea...see they are fairly cheap, my guess is that your main gear broke some teeth so you wont need the worm drive gear, but for 36+shipping why not get both.
