My name is Tim Knox and I live in Ohio,I hope someone can help me! I am new to this website and I have heard a lot of goods things about its members. I have a 1997 cobra w/ 86,000 miles on it. It is almost stock other than the radiator and cold air intake. For some reason here lately it has been using oil. It's not leaking or smoking so I am stumped where it could be going. I have had owned about 10 mustangs in the last three years, but this is my first 4.6. I feel like an idiot when it comes to this car. The car was not abused before I owned it, I have records and I change the oil like I am supposed to. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

When you say "using oil" how much are you talking about? If you lose a quart a month to a month and a half that is not so significant on a car with that many miles. It can be getting burned, slipping past the piston rings, at such a slow rate that you don't notice any blue smoke. It IS normal for an engine to use some oil, that is why you are supposed to check it every so often.

If you are losing more oil than that leaking on the ground would be quite obvious, so it's not that. You might want to check your coolant to see if there is any oil there to cover all bases.

Mine uses a quart or so every oil change, about 2,500-3,000 miles.

My stock 4.6 did too, had about 85k on it when I pulled it, and actually ran great. My new mill uses about half that, but I expect it to go up.
