PBR Cobra Calipers on 13" Rotors (1998 Mustang GT Convertible)

Hey all,

I've been reading and getting conflicting answers on various forums, but I believe my setup should work.

I recently purchased PBR dual piston Cobra calipers and these rotors:

It's going on a 98 GT and I've read that the GT PBR calipers won't fit on the 13" rotor but it's correct to assume my PBR cobra calipers would fit?

Here's a setup for sale that states this, but of course Real World experience is better than what some "website" says.

The autoplicity link looks like rear rotors, the photo definitely isn't 13".

If you bought cobra dual piston calipers, they will fit 13" rotors, just make sure the calipers came with the bracket. its that simple. We are talking front axle correct?

The photo was just for representation according to the caption.

It is for the front and the calipers came with the bracket and loaded.

I'm swapping them out for new pads though too.

Front brake lines should swap between 94-04 Cobra, and 99-04 GT/V6. You're safe there. Pads look good, rotors look good.

Cobra and PBR aren't the same. PBR is intended for an 11" rotor, not a 13". It won't work, you need cobra calipers.

This was the confusing part. They are PBR brand but say Cobra on them (cobra is raised metal).

Do you know what I'm talking about?

From my dive into forums I read that PBR manufacturered Cobra brakes as well. So I'm thinking these may be them?

I'm not sure though so this is why I posted this thread.

These need 13" Sounds like this is what you have, and you should be good to go :thumbsup:

measure the pistons, if its 40mm, they would be the same.

PBR is the manufacturer for both. The GT caliper is for the 11" rotor, the Cobra caliper is for the 13" rotor. But they do have the 'Cobra' 13" caliper without a logo.

But from what you've posted, you should be covered. It will work, although you should do the rears and I don't think you need anything else since you have hydroboost. The early cars need a MC to be right as well.

The rear rotors are different, and the calipers are the same. Rear GT caliper/Cobra Caliper, same thing. you'll need bigger rotors, different brackets to relocate the caliper, and anti moan brackets for the caliper as well. New dust shields would be an option, and new lines are needed to reach the reorientated caliper.

Any adverse effects if I only replace the pads and rotor with GT specs?

Also, if I could find all the part #'s for each product it'd probably be helpful in comparing cost. I'm assuming doing the full Cobra upgrade can't be that much more expensive if I'm replacing the rotors anyway.

I upgraded the fronts to 13" Cobras. And redid the rears with new GT pads/rotors. I did put the cobra master cylinder in it, this is before hydroboost brakes was a thing. Doesn't affect you, (95% sure).

You can find stuff on ebay and such too. And this guy makes new caliper brackets. If I can get my hands on a machined bracket, I was going to make myself a pair at work. Just flat steel laser cut and bent. You'll still need to find some anti moan brackets, apparently they do make a difference. Keep in mind, the axles have to be pulled since the caliper mount brackets mount behind the axle onto the axle housing.

You've been a huge help. I'm glad I have this to go off of, if necessary.

I'm thinking I'm just going to replace the rotor with GT specs and pads.

I'll ask again, I know it won't be as balanced but do you foresee it being a huge issue with having Cobra front brake/rotor specs and GT rears?

Not a problem. Mine seems fine, I'd like to eventually upgrade, but at a budget, lol. I've been replacing with SS lines too, so right now my fronts are SS, and the rear SS lines are made for a Cobra, so I can't use em yet, lol. I did a ton of research this spring on the subject, so everything's still pretty easy to remember, lol.
