Been reading through some old posts trying to plan the day's events in an attempt to resolve some issues. Thought I might see if anyone had anymore suggestions or recommendations.

Here's the situation, I have a high mileage '94 gt that is basically stock (K&N, Headers, TB). From what I can tell I have three issues that I'm trying to fix, it's possible that they're all related, but I'm really not great at trouble shooting so? First on fairly rare occasions, probably once or twice a week, the car is pretty hard to start. Typically it starts on the first or second try. I can hear the fuel pump kick in when I turn the key, but I am still running the factory pump? The second issues is a slight shudder at lower rpm's, doesn't seem to always be there, more on hot days after the car's been warmed up. I just recently replaced the dist cap and rotor along with plugs and wires and a new coil and checked the compression. The third issue is well for a lack of a better description the car will seem to "hiccup" while running down the interstate. It might only happen once or twice on my commute to work, but seems to happen more in the evenings and almost always will do this in the same place on my drive home. On Wednesday shortly after the expected "hiccup" the car actually shut off. I drifted to a stop waited a few moments and cranked the ignition a few times and it started up and ran like a top the rest of the way home?

So I plan on having the codes read at Advance replacing the O2 sensors and cleaning the MAF and PCV today as all of these have never been replaced and or cleaned. I might even replace the distributor as well as it's the factory piece also, or is it possible to just replace some of the components on the distributor? Anybody have any recommendations as to the mfg of the O2 sensors or dist?

Also if there are any further recommendations as to other items to try I'm more than willing to listen, she's my daily driver and I would love to get these items resolved...

PIP in the distributor, it's replaceable, but it's not super easy to do. I'd just replace it for a reman unit from advanced auto. I'd also replace the fuel filter since it's cheap and easy to change

what kind of plugs did you use?
cleaning the Maf should help some systems too. K&N style filters like to deposit oil on the maf
You should also pick up a Haynes manual while your at Advance too.
How many miles is a lot? I have 190k+

I really hope it's no the fuel pump as I'm really not looking to have to drop the tank! I did pick up a filter, but at this point it probably won't be installed till tomorrow. Pretty sure that I used Ford racing platinum plugs? I'm really suspecting the distributor as there's also a bit of a bump in the idle as well. Really didn't notice it till today, I really don't typically have much time in the car sitting still. I have a Haynes manual as well as a Chiltons (sp?). I was a bit disappointed to find that neither of the Advance Auto parts stores I stopped at could check the codes on an OBD1 car.

Oh as far as mileage she's showing just a hair under 322k on the odometer, and I regularly get about 23 to 24 mpg...but it's dropped a touch lately.

The drivability problem (hard start, shudder/miss) really sounds like a --cap,rotor, plugs or wires.-- something in the ignition system.

The stalling sounds like that TFI module.

But those are my first guess.

And yea, regular motorcraft coppers/platinums. My car came with bosche 4 tip things when I got it. The car would run great and hard till like 4 grand, then peter out and miss by 5K. :dontknow:

the parts stores around me can't do OBD1 either.
Your manual can tell you how to pull codes with a paperclip. That's what I do.
Usually when the distributor goes out, it usually happens when hot. sometimes you'll get a code sometimes not.

I'll give the paperclip a shot, the starting issues were worse in the winter than now when it's warmer...

Cleaned the MAF and got it back on, she seems to start easier when cold, however hot restarts still seem to be a problem. Haven't pulled the PCV but I did pull the hose and it is drawing a vacuum while running, which according to the Haynes manual means it's working correctly. Gonna try the fuel filter today, do I need to relieve the pressure off the fuel system before I pull the filter?

To answer your earlier question, I'd recommend NTK or Motorcraft for the o2 sensors and a reman'd stocker for the distributor. Have you replaced the ECT yet? (coolant temp sensor)

You should, but if your careful and have a rag wrapped around the fitting when you crack it loose you should be OK

Drove her again today and she ran fine on the way to work, however shut off again on the interstate twice on the way home. Which leads to another question, if the engine dies shouldn't the tach still read that the engine is turning, at least till I push in the clutch? I guess what I'm getting at is where does the signal for the tach come from? Is it possible that the computer is loosing signal that the engine is still turning and thus cuts off fuel or spark? And I'm still perplexed that it seems to happen at the same place (about 15 minutes into an hour and half commute) then runs fine the rest of the way home?

I have not changed the ECT, but if there's a chance it'll help I'll put it on the list, which is taking much longer to work through than I would like. Would appear that I'm not very motivated to work on her when it's really hot or really cold or raining....damn I'm lazy!
