What do you mean by polish? I pulled mine off and hit the whole thing with a wire wheel, worked great.

It's not too bad. Remove the pulley first, then the electrical connector points on the back, now you will see three long bolts on the outer edge of the case, remove these and pry the case apart

Just make sure you pay attention as pulling apart so you can getting everything back in again easily

Here's my painted alt in the car

As OP has a 5.0 his alternator isnt cover by anything, you can clearly see it.

Understood but the method I describe to disassemble the alt doesnt change one bit

I wouldn't recomend just hitting it with a wire wheel unless you do something to keep the metal shaving from getting inside the alt......

Yes, no way to slide open the case without removing the pulley first.

The pulley is easy, just use an impact. If you dont own one a lot of parts stores will be happy to do it for you as well.

I have a stock alternator. If you want, i can sandblast the casing and powdercoat it a color of your choice. Ship it out to you and then youd just need to swap covers. My car is down for a couple more years and the alternator will be replaced when i get to that point so its doing nothing but sitting in the garage.

I do not have an impact and have had to remove the pulley a couple of times. I would just take it off and and take it into a local garage/shop and asked them. I would offer $5 for lunch or something but the would not take it for 3 secs of work. Even if they had it was still alot easier and cheaper for me.........
