power steering return line

Ok got my oil changed today and they told me I have a leak in the return line of my power steering. My question is how hard is it to change? I would change my own oil but I can get it done for the same price as buying the stuff myself, and yes I am mechanically inclined.

changing the power steering lines isnt too bad.

depending on the leak location, it can be fairly easy.

it may also be a bad vynal seal on the end of the hose. these are extremely cheep from your local FoMoCo Dealer.

if your PS hose is bad, they are all pretty self explanitory...

if you remove one from the booster assembly on the firewall, some people suggest bleeding the brakes (??????)

In my 3.8 just turning the wheels without hitting the stops bled them, on theses hydro-boost systems would it be different?

ya if its anything like my truck just turn the wheel side to side a few times. Sorry guys this is my first run in with this style power steering, so im a little unsure. I really appreciate all the help guys THANKS!!!

Chris, leave the bs out of tech posts.



When you said return line this is from rack to reservoir where does it come/go from. This will explain a lot. As far as the hyro-boost setup, just drive it and cycle the the system, it will work but take longer then a normal p/s setup.

If you get me the to/from as to where the line goes I will get you the repair procedure.

Ok let me see if I can explain this to you, It is the front one in the triangle on the hydrobooster to the inside of the reservoir (reservoir has two into the bottom of it, the one im talking about is the one towards the middle of the car, also the one im talking about is teed into the bottom of the res. I really hope you know what im talking about lol. Thanks again

It ties into the radiator thru a tee and then into the reservior

I'd like to add, as long as im injecting BS into threads, that on my 1996 Gt when we drained my power steering fluid to replace my steering rack, my homosexual friend, Aaron, litterally blew on the res. fill-hole.

The next time i drained a power steering system was in my friends Ford Taurus. No gay guy was available, so we used an air compressor a peice of cardboard (to make a "seal") so feel free to use the "blow-hard" technique when you drain your system, as it works like a charm.

Also, none of the lines run to the radiator. 2 lines runs to the cooler, in front of the radiator. These lines can be detached with a pair of plyers and a hearty pull.

So going to bring this one back up, come to find out this is a discontinued part from Ford. Autozone and Kragen dont have anything like it so I am goin to have to make my own, anyone done this before?

I had a local shop make a hydroboost line for my 99 1-ton a few years ago it was like 60 for them to do it with the fitting, take the line off and have them copy it. It will work and most of the time they can do the same fittings if they are available.

I am going that route myself, I just wondered if someone had done it before, and I would copy their idea, so I dont have to be a car down as this is my dd.
