Just out of curiosity - dudes that have had their Stangs painted in the last year or so.

What does a complete go for? I realize there are varying degrees of prices based on body condition, etc. But assuming no major dents or body work, scuff, prime and shoot (2 stage - clear) - where is that in the ballpark price range? I don't really care for Maco or the mass production shops, but lets assume mid-grade painter.

I can do small things here and there like side skirts and spoilers, but the bigger car needs a redo by a pro.

Thanks!

$3,790 to be exact, lol!

people will disagree but i have had several cars painted and i know for a fact you get exactly what you pay for.

when ya go to a shop, this is the most important thing you can do!! look at a car that is finished by them. make them show you. if they wont....BOUNCE!

if they do, look at the quality and decide for yourself if you would be happy with that paint job.

if you are just repainting same color with no real body work, a decent one will be around 15-2000.

and while they are painting your car, show some interest in how it's coming along. they will try harder to do ya right....just some small tips that i've learned over the years when dealing with body shops!

I paid ~$1k for my paint, but I had a lot of connections and did most of the work myself. It was a lot of labor on my part, however I saved a good deal and am proud of my work. Had I gone to a shop and simply "dropped" the car off I'm sure I would have paid at least what the people above posted.

I got quoted 1400 with ppg base and clear in rio red here. Should be getting it done in the next couple weeks. So far the work I have seen form the shop looks great and even includes some higher price european cars so I hope it goes well.

I agree with Tony. Even though some people will say you are being a nuisance, if you drop by once a week, they try extra hard to get it right or they know you will catch the problem. The next car I have painted, I'm going to Tony's guy.

I paid $800ish for mine a couple years ago but I got a steal and the quality is not perfect.

They did a lot of minor bodywork, but a good bit of it. Dings everywhere, ghetto spray painted stripes to remove, etc. Custom mixed paint, white with silver pearl and silver metalflake. I got it for $800 because the shop was relatively new and wanted something they could point out and say they did and I also left it with them for nearly 3 months while they did it in between real jobs that would be paying better. Overall, my paint doesn't look fantastic now, a few years later, but I didn't expect it to when I had it painted. It wasn't perfect but I didn't pay for perfect so I'm not complaining. You can find a deal if you're willing to work with a shop, but you have to be realistic with the outcome.

you can spend as much as you would imagine and you get what you pay for. Check out the reps of your local shops and don't be afraid to check maaco or other paint shops you would normally not consider. While they normally specialize in cheap/fast jobs if you let them know you are wanting something good done they can do it. Maaco painted and installed my side exhaust skirts 3 yrs ago and been happy with them since.

This is a terrible question..there will be HUGE differences in prices from various shops and depending on your location, color of the car, etc.

Why not go get some quotes rather than guessing on the net?

My brothers car was completely re done with a "custom color" and ended up costing about 3k~ from a mid grade shop....but im sure you could get it donme for less than 1k at a cheap place and you could spend 10k at another shop.

as he said there are too way many variables. Same color where they do not need to do the door jams and undersides of pieces? Are they taking the pieces off and shooting them or shooting them on the car?

Rough guess with out seeing the car you can figure $200 a panel and thats a fender sized panel. It all depends on the shop cause Ive seen the same car get prices from $1500-5000k for base/clear and they all would of had the same out come.

it's like this.

any above average bodyshop knows that they can charge top $$ for their work. if you go to a shop and they tell you they want $500 to paint your entire car....run!

any experienced shop knows what to charge for excellent work. and will not even bother quoting under $2k for an all over. jams and under lids included.....even more. ya get what ya pay for at this point in the auto body world, lol.

if ya got a backyard painter wwith mad skills that can shoot with the best of them for $500 your a lucky bastard. but the rest of us will pay several thousand dollars for excellent paint. in which i would want nothing less or i wouldnt fuuk with it.

Thanks for the ballparks, thats what I was looking for. I know its going to vary greatly, I just wanted to know generally before going out and getting estimates.

Thanks for the responses, I can now start figuring my budget.

I've shot catalyzed urethanes before, one of my good friends used to be in the business, and he scared me with a $6k estimate, but I know he used to shoot porsches so.....

On top of looking at the spray quality of the shops also ask about brnads of materials that will be used. I made sure my quote included PPG paint and PPG clear so I knew I was also getting a quality product. I don't know much at all about paint but I do know PPG tends to be a quality product.

ppg is a great product. awesome clear!

once you get it finished and if you have some runs, orange peel, a little dirt here & there that stuff can be corrected pretty easily. even w/o a buffer. just in case ya go with a mid grade paint job from a shop. even some of the best body shops skip shit and you may be the only one that see's it but if your like me it will fn drive you crazy, lmao!!

Right on with fixing defects. I'm not afraid of a little extra cut and buff if they miss something.

I've used PPG on guitar projects before, its great stuff. Spies/Hecker is another I've used which I think is the default brand of Porsche. Most of the time the differences in the clear are the amounts of UV protection (or none at all) that they add to the clears. I've shot some real cheap stuff on guitars called OMNI, which is PPG's bottom of the barrel brand. You can tell the consistency is more watery and in general would be epic fail on a car.

The other concern I have is the industry is switching over to water based urethanes, instead of traditional petroleum based. I need to ask around to see what the going stuff is these days, and how durable it is. With that vibrant red, I always have concerns about fading. Then again, it lives in the garage most of the time anyway.

Thanks though everyone, great feedback. I now know at least I can afford this in the "nearer" future.

Probably $5-6k for a quality job? I was quoted a bit over $2k to get everything but the doors and rear quarter panels painted on a convertible.

Yeah I was actually told if I wanted PPG's premium clear coat it would cost the 1400 bucks. For basic clear I was coated something lower. It's worth it to me to get the best clear :) If you guys can help with removing defects I may find when I get her back that would be awesome!
