Ok I have a member on here who I might be picking up a set of PI cams from. They are the bolt on style which means they are romeo cams which a lot of people say thats the way to go in NPI heads. Now, what all will I need if I get this PI Cam? I already have the PI intake on the car. Is there anything else I will need to do if I get and install these cams? Tune? replace anything. I just want to be FULLY sure about everything before I make the purchase. Thanks and let me know :)

if the cams already come with the gears bolted on, then the only thing you will need to buy is the engine assembly lube.

if they dont have the gears on the cams, you will need to go to ford and buy the Cam Gear Bolts for a 2002 GT.

Will I need a tune or is it suggested?

neither really. its always an option, but your car will run fine with or without a tune. mine even passed the strict california emissions tests with all the bolt ons i have and the PI cams and intake, stock tune

And you have incountered no problems what so ever? Even with the bigger duration and all?
If you say it's safe I can only trust your word because I don't know haha.

nope, no problems at all. i only had that combo (npi heads with PI cams/intake) for about a year and a half, after that i swapped out the npi heads for the pi heads. never had a single problem with the npi/pi combo, and my car would constantly see 6000rpms

Ok, cool.

Now for a novice to working on cars.... should I even attempt a PI Cam swap?

i would say go for it. take lots of pics so you remmeber where everything goes, and be careful of the sharp edged on the exposed heads. i learned the hard way and have a nice little battle scar.

really not that hard at all, are you doing the "remove timing chain cover" method or the "Ford cam removal tool" method?

Probably going to go with the removal tool.
I just don't want to screw anything up......

ok, you should be good. just remember to put the #1 cylinder at TDC, and as a helpful tip to make sure the cam gears didnt skip on the chain, use small c-clamps on the gears to stop them from dropping (going lower, creating slack in the chains, and maybe skipping a tooth on the crank gears) and zip ties when you can. on the drivers side head, the cam gear has holes you can use to make sure the gear doesnt skip a tooth, but the passanger side one doesnt.

explaination on the c-clap tip:

when you take off the valve covers, you will see th exposed gears and chains. get the c-clamp and clamp it against the gear (NOT THE CHAIN!!!!) as close to the head/timing cover as you can. do one c-clamp on each side of the gear. this will prevent unwanted horizontal movement of the gear/chain and help reduce the chance of the chain skipping a tooth anywhere. i *might* have pics of this when i did mine, but i would have to look for them

Ok, thanks for the tips man.
This is going to be a while before I install them.
But then again, I have a warranty through a shop that installed my motor so maybe that will just install the cams for me. Which will probably void my warranty....

Haha, I'm probably going to have someone with me who is more experienced than I am.
Hopefully things will go smoothly but I should definately pick the cams up? They are 75+shipping

thats a good price. i got mine for $60+ shipping, but a few months later i was able to score some for a friend of mine for $20. mine were the bolt on-gear type, his were the press-on type tho.

I have the Anderson Tool that loosens the tension on the chains so you can pull them off of the gears easier. It worked great when I did my PI cam/intake swap this past summer. There is a sticky in the 96-98 forums about the PI cam and intake swap. I followed this to the t and it helped me do mine. I would suggest getting with Randy on Modularmisfits, he works at a Ford Dealer and is very knowledgeable. Tell him what you are doing and he will get you the right bolts for what you need.

Read over the sticky in the 96-98 section as many times as you can first. Otherwise its not too bad of an install. I found it easier to do that than it has been to change the headers or damn h-pipe.
