So im about to look at a 96 mustang gt convertible, and i know that the car has been sitting for years infront the owners house, and he says its the fuel pump which went bad. so i was wondering if the motor can seize up just sitting there? should i try to turn the motor with a beaker bar or try to crank it with the a good battery in? any help is appreciated.

when the valve train is deprived of oil for extended times, the "lash adjusters" can sink, or freeze up. I don't think you will be able to figure out if that is the case just by turning it over by hand. even if they are frozen, soaking them in oil should be all it takes to get them back to normal.

if the fuel pump went bad, it may not matter if you put a good battery in or not. it might not start, depending on if "bad" means going out, or broken.

good luck with the purchase. I've never changed the pump itself, but dropping the tank is not a big job, so if you can get the car at a reasonable price it is probably a smart buy.

take an 18mm socket and breaker bar. make sure its in nuetral and e-brake on, to check the turn by hand to check threshold of crank compression. check integrity of coil packs for cracks. Mainly around connectors and the epoxy coated area. a fuel pump is a 2 hour ordeal. use a floor jack if at less then 1/4 tank level. usually if tanks are at a less then 1/4 level and been sitting a few years is a bad sign of needing a new tank, pump and fuel sender. all those parts are relatively cheap and EASY to change.

if youre really worried about it you can take the plugs out and spray a little WD-40 in the cylinders to lubricate the rings before you turn it over. i would do that and then give it a turn or so with a breaker bar then you should be all good to bust it off. oil pressure should build almost instantly.
