Question: Which 3.73 Gear Install Kit

I?m going to be installing the FRPP Cobra rear brake kit I bought from AM last winter. Of course, this requires removing the axles to install the new mounting brackets. Since I was going to have the pumpkin open anyway I was thinking about upgrading the gears to 3.73s. My question is:

There are 2 install kits on AMs site. One is a Motive: http://www.americanmuscle.com/rearendrebuild.html and the other is Ford Racing: http://www.americanmuscle.com/frpp-88-pinion-kit-8604.html. The FRPP kit appears to have different bearings and more components, but no diff cover gasket. My GT has 62k miles on it and hasn?t been ?beat on?. If I do swap out my gears I will be using a recommended shop here in town do the work. I know the FRPP kit is only $25 more, but if I don?t need it then I can use that money toward gear lube. If I do swap out the gears, I will have the shop swap the rear brakes too.

It is always strongly recommended to go with Ford racing gears to eliminate the chance of gear whine. Many Motive installs have been just fine too.
Motive does have a great bearing install kit that you will need during install.
That's what I know from my install experience. I'm sure others can enlighten you more shortly. Good Luck!

I went with the FRPP install kit when i had mine done and have nothing but compliments about it.

FYI... FRPP uses Motive Gears as there supplier. If it doesn't have the ford emblem stamped on the pinion you got a motive gear and they're going to make more noise than a true FRPP gear...

There is no such thing as a diff cover gasket. Just use some "Great Stuff" or black RTV. Maybe someone makes one for it, but it wasn't built with one......

They do make them..I know felpro does for a fact cause.that's the one I used when I flushed my fluid a couple months ago

RTV is good enough of a gasket. you don't need that paper gasket.

I used black RTV when I changed the gear lube & swapped out my diff covers on my Jeep a few years ago. No problems with leaks. The Motive kit in the link I posted above has a paper gasket.
