I'm pretty new to the exhaust thing and had a couple questions. I bought my stang from my uncle a while back and all it has is Flowmaster 40s mufflers. I want to make it a bit louder, but not too loud. I 've been lookin around at the off road exhaust mid pipes. My friend tells me it will not pass smog because it has no cats, and I would get a ticket because itll b too loud.

So i got questions about the off road mid pipes-

Every year when u smog it, do you switch back to your stock midpipes?
Then after it passes do u put them back on?
Why are most legal midpipes over $400+?

The catt'd mids cost more because of the high flow converters. Some of those converters are @$100 each.
If you don't mind changing your pipe every year then get an offroad but it is a $10,000 fine if you get busted by a cop who wants to be a dick because having no cats is a federal crime not state so if they want they can really screw you over.

Oh and having no cats will ramp up the smell of your exhaust some also. You only lose like 2-3 hp with the cats thats why i chose a Bassani with cats.

Hey whats up man, to answer your first question. Me personally when i just got my car i had bought an off road x-pipe but i was worried about the same thing so i kept the cats on, so right after i had my car go through emissions i put the O/r x-pipe on. But here in maryland we have are emissions check due about every 2 years, and in a few months it will be about that time again. So i asked a few of my buddies that have the x-pipe on their car and apparently hes been through there twice with the pipe on and and passed both times, i guess since he had the MIL eliminatiors on there, the emissions station didnt see a code in there computer for the emissions.. so the let him through, no problems.. but well see what happens when i go there, my luck they will look under the car. But anyways, with cali being so anal about smog and stuff like that it might just save you a lot of trouble and just get the catted pipe. hopes this helps a little

Get a catted pipe as many have said before. I really like having my off road h pipe. I heard that the emissions here are going to be only diagnostics.. no sniffer test.

I have had No cats in Cali for 4 years now...Still no Bust

The trick is too run a catback with the O/R pipe that isnt too loud. I run bassani because i can keep it take but it screams when you give it some gas.

i dont like taking my mid-pipe off so here is what i do....

I drive to compton and pay some Due $150 to pass it, easy as cake.

If you have no cats just dont get busted by the cops, and no how to control that loud pedal. Only stock mid-pipe will pass smog in cali.
