So, im changing my cars oil for the 1st time ever on any car. I got the car on rhino ramps and i got all the oil out i think, but it doesnt seem like much in the pan. The pan is supposly 7 quarts, but its only half way full?

I tried to tilt the car with a jack, but not much came out. So is it my car empty meaning its burned alot of oil or did the shop just add 2 quarts of oil last time? :dontknow: :dontknow:

just add the right amount and keep an eye on it... that why you know EXACTLY whats going on.

if you have a 5.0 remember theres a front oil pan bolt.

also, remember to take off the filter.

4.6s hold 6 quarts of oil... However you will never get that 6 quarts back out of the car at an oil change. Some stays in the engine in various places. Now you can get more oil out of one if you change it when the engine is warm which makes the oil flow better, but it still won't be 6 quarts worth. As long as the car isn't burning the oil, blue smoke out the tail pipe, oil going into the water, looks like a milk shake, or a major leak some where then don't sweat it. Do you check your oil regulary to see if it is using any oil?

Only 1 quart drained into the old bottle. So there was only 1 quart in my engine ..

No, i dont check my oil .. this was my 1st time changing it because it needed it since the oil guage was flicking inside the car but the oil shop wasnt open due to the holiday. So, i changed it myself for the 1st time. But i guess ill keep a look on it. The only time it blows smoke out of the tailpipe is when you redline it into 1st all of suden than shift lol.

But i added 5.5 quarts of shell sae 5w30 Guess im done giving the shop money to change my oil. It was easy as hell with the oil wrench :eek:ccasion14:

thanks

edit: Theres no there oil spots on my garage so i guess its just burning oil.

they might have shorted you oil in the first place, then your filter could have gotten clogged and held on to some, plus theres still some on your cylinder walls and in the heads and what not...

dude, you have a dipstick for a reason....use it. It doesn't take doing your own oil change to realize you only have a 1qt in the pan.

the oil filter holds a decent amount of oil as well. and how do you know it was only one quart in the motor, did you drain it back into bottles?

and like stated above, you should be checking your oil level every other week or so. it takes 2 minutes.

Changing your own oil... It's just one small step closer to actually working on your own car. I consider changing ones own oil the right of passage into the world of cars. If one cannot do this... then one does not need to be around cars. I applaud thee.

If you only had 1qt of oil in your car i really don't know how your car was running. Keep a close eye on it over the next week. I don't think you burned off 4 1/2 qts of oil since your last oil change. If you did then you have a very serious problem and your car would be running like crap. Please keep an eye on it.

Im serious.. the old oil only filled up 1 bottle. I checked the dipstick after refilling and it shows almost full. =[ So, i guess it was empty when i drained it. So, i will check it every now and than? Also, how many regular non car jukies do you know that checks there oil every other week? I dont know many, but i will be checking up on her now.

Dude, if your oil gage was fluxuating, you only had 1 quart of oil in it. You need to pay attention to your oil level. I will advise you to check your oil every time you fill up with gas.

Are you suppose to check it when the car is off or running?
WHen the car is off it shows virtually no oil. WHen the car is running it shows alittle over full.

Always have, so im not sure which one to look @.

Check it when the car is shut off. You can't get an acurate reading when the oil is circulating through the engine. You are reading the oil that is draining and getting splashed around in the engine while it is running.

Off! To get a accurate reading you will want your car to be operating temp and then let it sit about 10-15 seconds then check the dip stick.

So your saying that when the car is off it shows no oil on the dip stick??? If that is the case there are a number of things that could be going on. First thing i would check is to make sure you have the right dipstick.

If you were down to 1 quart of oil I would say you have started destroying your cam/connecting rod bearings. I would seriously look at the oil you just drained and look for metal shavings. With 1 quart your motor would have made a nasty knocking sound. What I don't get is why (if you were low) the low oil light didn't come on either. Something is not right. I wonder if the motor isn't sludge(d) up. Might have to take a crash course and pull the valve covers and lower intake and peek around.
