uh. well all of a sudden, whenever i'm stopping from ten miles a mile to zero it makes a popping sound that goes in motion to the rear wheels turning..

still drives fine... but people are telling me my rear is about to toast...

so i guess my question, is if i get new gears with a rebuild kit will that fix my popping, or am i going to have to get axles and shit?

yeah, well the spider gear is going to be really expensive?? god!! so if i just get the a new gear set it won't be fixed, i was actually just about to get new master rebuild kit and a set of 3.73s.... that wouldn't fix my problem?? i'm screwed. i'm on such a tight budget as it is....

bump...

today i went to have my new toyo proxys put on the ass when i noticed that my rear is leaking... its not a horible leak. but the bottom of the differential cover is nasty lookin... perhaps if i pop the cap off get some new gear fluid and reseal it. my problems would be better, or did i already screw myself?

if it is already leaking take the cover off and look for pieces of metal in the housing.

the fluid is going to drop out whenever i take the cover off?

which fluid would you guys reccommend to put in there? a royal purple synthetic...

also... i want to do gears this friday. i've chosen my ratio to be 3.73.. but is their a difference between ford racing and motive gears?? or should i just get frpp?

I'm willing to bet anything, that if your housing is leaking like you said, then the noise is being caused from low gear oil. Yes, the fluid will drain out when you take the cover off. Take off the bottom bolts at first, pry the bottom of the cover open and let it drain out before you remove the cover. As for gear oil, I'm a tightwad, and was on an extremely tight budget so I bought Valvoline 80w90 gear oil. Don't forget your friction modifier!! My 95's rear took about almost 2qts (64oz) + the 7oz bottle of friction modifier. Fill it with one bottle of gear oil, then add the friction modifier, and continue adding gear oil until it over flows. I'd recommend a pump for filling, because the shit tastes awful and doesn't flow easily.

Might wanna check the cover for flatness before you re-seal it. And if you are using it as a jacking point, don't that's how you get a leaky cover :slap:

Oh yeah! I almost forgot!

Use black RTV to make a gasket for that rear end cover. Be sure to lay a nice thick bead, rub it with your finger to help distribute it, and then build it back up by putting some more on it to ensure no more leaks!

why not just buy another rubber gasket? I was thinking of changeing my gear oil soon too since my car has 150k and the oil has never been changed exept once at 29k when the rear went out in it ... "still under 30k warrenty" :) but, royal purpal makes a good one right? and what is a good weight and whats the difference between weights and where can i get friction mod? thanks

No idea about the weights. Someone told me to go with 75w90, another told me to go with 80w90. the 80w90 was cheaper, so thats what I bought. As for the friction modifier, you can get it at Autozone/Advanced. My local Advanced has idiots working, and none of us could find it. It will be in a blue tube, with a white cap. Trans-X is the brand. It'll say something like Posi-Trac Limited Slip Gear Oil Additive on it.

Mine did that for awhile and it turned out to be the spring was busted off one of my rear brake pads, allowing it to free float on the rotor.
