Alright well since my rear end is going out im going to have to get it rebuilt. I believe the 96 cobra has a 28 spline rear? Was thinking about going to a 31 but besides the differential, 373 gears, and axles.. what else is needed? Sorry to sound ignorant but when it comes to something like this i can get a bit clueless even though ive read..... and if you think i should go another route let me know. Trying to spend the least amount of money by the way. (I know this is expensive)

Thanks

No need for 31 spline unless you are doing any reasonable amount of racing and making good power. Most of the time 28 spline will out last anything that 99 percent of the world will throw at it.

Right now im pretty much stock except for a bit of suspension work and some basic bolt ons but as soon as this gets fixed im planning on putting all bolt ons, 315s, and eventually a turbo (Two years from now or sooner). I figured i would go that route since i was in the need of redoing it already but if you guys think the 28 will be sufficient then ill do that.

agreed, I think 28 will be MORE than enough for what you are running. Also like said, all you will need is differential, axles, gears, bearing kit, fluid, girdle gasket and tools and that should about wrap it up.

thanks a lot man, I'm not too sure of a kit that has absolutely everything you need, but check out american muscle, there you can pick up differential, axles, bearing install kit and fluids and save some serious coin with our 6% off plus free shipping

Ive bought from there a few times. I agree they have some killer prices and parts. I actually was on there today at work fixing up a list of what to purchase for this fix and as for 6% off how does this work? First time i hear of it lol and i emailed the list myself here it is

Ford Racing Traction - LOK Limited Slip Differential - 28 Spline 8.8in (86-04 V8)
Our price: $189.99

Ford Racing Differential Cover - 8.8in (86-12 GT, Mach 1, GT500; 93-98 Cobra; 11-12 V6)
Our price: $184.99

1986-12 Mustang 8.8" 3.73 Ratio Rear End Gear Kit with Ford Racing Gears and fluid
$244.99 http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/item/LRS-4209FRB-K/Mustang-88-373-Ratio-Rear-End-Gear-Kit

Superior 8.8 Axles - 28 Spline 5 Lug (94-98 GT, Cobra)
Our price: $119.99

any suggestions? This isnt including labor because i dont have the time to just attemp it myself besides bolt ons and i dont want to wait 1 year to start to complete a simple project lol

looks like youre all set to me. Like jason said you could always go with 31's, but honestly on a mild setup like yours if its saving you some coin than I would just stay 28 unless you had big plans in the future

31's man. Only a couple hundred more on the diff and axles. But will survive much more power.

Oh and you forgot the full bearing/seal kit. Its about 70 IIRC.

Right i should have been more specific. But ya eventually i want to get it pushing quite a bit! Ill post pics here soon and start a build thread

Even if you stick to your plans and are making 400 in the near future you still won't need 31 spline axles unless you plan on doing a good amount of track duty on DR's or slicks. Your not going to break an axle just driving down the street. Even at the track with street tires on you would just spin before you ever got the tractionto break a 28 spline axle.

I have a friend with a 500hp turbo fox an he runs stock axles, no track duty and he has been fine for years. If your doing extensive track time with good tiresthen yes get 31's if your going to drive it on the street then 28's are fine

Well eventually i do want to take it on the track and have DR's. Also how hard is it to rebuild a rear end yourself and about how long would it take non stop to do? lol (Getting ideas) never done one or any hardcore mechanical stuff. Do have a general idea and know how to put things back the way they were. But cant say i can do a rearend just because i know that
