Rear main seal?

I thought that was standard operating procedure for manuals. I'd NEVER try putting a 5 speed trans in with the bell attached to it.

ive done it many times... isnt all that bad... hardest part really s is just getting that damn input shaft into that stupid close tolerance pilot bearing..



as far as rear main seals go... depends on the engine and how ya do it.. some can be a pain some will go easily... when i did the one in my truck i just took a small punch (smaller than the seal itself) and lightly tapped it till i had enough out on the other side i could grab it with my fingers and pull it.. and havent ever had any problems with my seals leaking after i replaced them..

A great trick to get the input shaft into that close tolerance pilot bearing is to just have the trans separate from the bell, get the input shaft started and then just use the bolts from the bell to the trans to pull it in the rest of the way. Done it numerous times and it makes the job much easier. The pop you hear when it finally goes in is quite gratifying.

i did that with the bell housing on when i had the tranny and the engine out at the same time.. was easier to put them together outta the truck than when its in it.. was a trick i picked up when i worked in the stealership.. dad didnt believe me itd work till i showed him how to do it.. down side to doing it that way is if your not careful you can actually end up forcing that pilot bearing further into the crank and not getting the shaft into it.. (one of the guys in the shop learned that one the hard way.. ended up having to drill it out to get a new one in..)

Eh, I always make sure to get it at least started a little bit and when it gets to be a pain I just use the bolts to pull it the rest of the way in. I've had my 3550 trans in my old 91GT and my current 95 Cobra and I think its been installed a total of 3 times now. Only once did it go right in without having to use the bolt trick. Oddly enough the 2 T-5 installs I've done went right in with no trouble.

ive never messed with my tranny other than to put the short throw on it.. but ill know the pain eventually when i upgrade the clutch.. or the engine.. lol whichever comes first... but my trucks trannys just a general PITA no matter what way i do it.. cept that one time i did it outside of the truck when i had them both out...

If I have a lift I can have a trans and clutch swapped in 2-3 hours on a stang. It is quite easy as I'm sure you can see just by looking underneath. Everything is just so easily accessible on the underside of a stang.

sure is... which is the same with my truck.. but its problem was they didnt leave alot of clearance/wiggle room between the tranny and the floor to get it in...

if u have access to a hoist some how, DO IT! cuts the time down sooo much... nothing worse than laying on a garage floor tryin to line up the damn pilot! :wall:

sure there is... try it laying on a gravel driveway.. specially when one of the sharp edges gets pointed right into your back... paved garage floor is a dream compared to that...
