OK, so i need to rebuild my rear end. I have a couple of questions. I posted something in the general tech area but it got overlooked i guess, i know there have been a lot of rear end threads lately

1. I have 4.10s in my 28 spline rear right now. can the 28 spline ring and pinion be used in a 31 spline carrier? i dont think they can, so if not, where can i buy 8.8" 31 spline gears?

2. The pictures below are what i plan on buying. i dont know too much about rear ends, but if i bought this used carrier (~$60) and these new 31 spline axles, is there anything else i NEED to buy or anything else i SHOULD buy?

"this is a good rebuilt posi locker for all 8.8 ford mustang or f-150 trucks rear end with 31 spline axles."

Your existing ring and pinion can be re-used, and will bolt right up to the 31 spline t-lok.

That t-lok will work fine. If you want, you can buy the carbon clutch pack rebuild kit that is used in the 03/04 cobras. They will hold lots of horsepowers.

I'd get:

31 spline t-lok
31 spline axles
seals/bearings if yours are old
rebuild kit for the t-lok
fluid
install kit (shims and so on)

...and that's all I can think of right now.

Paul.

thanks paul, your advise always helps

how much fluid does it use? i have 2 quarts of royal purple, do i need more?

It would be nice to get the carbon kit, but i'm not making that much power and i think the 31 spline should be strong enough for what i have. the t-loc i'm buying is low mileage.

what do you think of the axle in that link?

You'll need a bit over 2 quarts of fluid.

What paul is saying about the clutch packs is NOT that you'll break them but they will not wear out as fast...i.e. you will end up doing peg leg one tire fire burnouts SOONER. Regardless of mileage, i'd rebuild it even if its stock. Pack an extra clutch disc in each side to tighten it up and you'll love it.

i may do it. how hard would it be to do the rebuild myself with my dad. he's done 9 inches before but never an 8.8.

If i didnt do it myself i would have to pay $150 for labor

Its nothing hard. Getting the spring back in is tricky but if you use a vice to "push" it back in, its cake.

Im not sure if your dead set on going with a 31 spline carrier but I do have my 8.8 28 spline left over from when I switched to 31 spline carrier. A new 31 spline carrier will cost around $250. If your interested in my 28 let me know. If you decide to go 31 spline as far as the axles I would only go with surperior, Moser or Ford Racing axles, that ebay you have up top for axles are made by Yukon I reconize the logo in the picture, they might be great or they might not be but I dont see many people running them so thats why Id stick with the main 3. Just remember you get what you pay for and its more expensive to do something twice then to do it right the first time.

Yes, I believe it will work - however, I'd like someone else to chime in before you run out and buy one. They also have carbon clutch paks which are neato.

It all comes down to if you really think you will need to upgrade to 31 splines. It was worth it for me b/c I planned on going to the track a lot and using some good sticky DR's but it all depends on what your plans are with the car. If your going to do nothing but drive it on the street then there really is no need to switching to 31's but if two years from now your doing the track thing and snap an axle with the 28's your going to wish you went witn 31's. If you do decide to go with 31's dont use the axles you posted in the other thread you made about the rear end going south. Those are Yukon axles thats why they are cheap, when it comes to upgrading its not worth going cheap. Get FMS, Moser, or superior axles if you go with 31's.

I have an auburn in my convertible, but now that I've seen guys go 10s at 135+ with a 31 spline t-lok with carbon clutch paks, I'll just do that from now on.
