removed my thermostat

so over the past 6 months or so that i have owned my car i have put 3 different thermostats in my car; a 195, 190, and 180. my overheating problems never fixed. today i just removed it and my problems are gone. is this going to effect anything in the future or can i leave it this way?

That just doesn't make sense. Why would all 3 not open. all different times and temps. were all 3 from the same company???

2 of them were autozone and the last one was from napa. the last one lasted the longest. didnt make sense to me either...

its not good to not have one in, your overheating might be cause your motor is bored .060 over, just a little quess, but you might want to look more into the overheating problem before you just leave the thermostat out

well your not goin to have heat and winter is comin up so id try and find the problem out asap if i was u and yeah also u might want to check other things other than your thermostat. goodluck on your problem.

Without the thermostat to hold the water in the block while the engine warms up you will instead constantly be circulating cold water through the engine so that it doesn't get a chance to warm up, except maybe for a 15-20 mile drive, then it will get luke warm.

Besides being cold in the car your engine will be running on default settings instead of in closed loop. This will be a reduction in fuel mileage and emissions will be higher.

Things that could be causing it to overheat......underdrive pulleys may not be moving enough volume of water through your water pump, water pump may be going out, what condition are your hoses in? Any of them collapsed? As mentioned is the air bleed hole (if provided) in the thermostat located properly? Is the thermostat in backwards? Is the fan working correctly? Have you seen it running at the appropriate temperature?

I would not run without the thermostat, particularly in the winter. Mine was stuck open last winter and I won't drive like that again.

Yeah without a thermostat your car will take a lot longer to heat up, bad for blowing heat and probably the engine also. Are you sure you were installing the Tstat the right way? It's not universal.

Is your fan working properly? A bad electrical issue with the fan can make it seem like a mechanical issue with either the water pump or thermostat. Apply +12v to pin #14 of the CCRM and see if your low speed fan comes on. Ground pin 17 to see if the high speed works. If you have an issue with either, take a look at the pigtail that attaches to the fan and see if it appears burned at all. Also, did your car have the recall performed on the fan wiring? They installed a circuit breaker in the fan wiring because the bearings are prone to failure and will cause the fan to catch fire when it draws too much power to start up.

Agree with all that have said dont leave it out. It was designed to run with one, and it wont be doing it much good running without it. :(

thanks for the help everyone. i havnt driven it anymore than around the block with it out, so i'll try buying a high quality stat and see if that helps. all of my hoses are good. if it still overheats after the new stat i will then go to the water pump, then the fan motor. if anyone else has anymore siggestions please share

i forgot to ask...someone i know mentioned that some people drill small, almost pin sized hole in the stat....anyone have any comments on that?

Deal with the fan before the water pump to save money. You can see if the fan is working or not by watching it and your temp gauge. O0

you should swap up to a 180° stat.
you car is not warming up to proper operating temperature and will constantly run in the open loop cycles. Fix your cooling problem the right way, swap back to a 180° stat, and I can almost assure you that you car will feel faster, feel like it has more power... and even get better gas mileage.

when i have my 180 in i would be at 210 plus every where. with the 160 i hit 180 in the city now and the car feels much better. seemed like i was boiling the fuel in the rails lol

No thermostat on a daily driver = bad idea. It will stay cool for a while, and take a long time to heat up.. but when it does heat up, it won't cool down.. your car will just overheat. This is because there is no thermostat to close and hold water in the block/radiator.. it just constantly flows.. so the water doesn't stay in your radiator long enough to transfer out the heat.. it just stays hot.

Put a brand new 160 or 180 in, and make sure it's installed correctly. If you're still overheating, investigate problems elsewhere. Fan functioning properly/spinning in proper direction (if the wires get crossed and your fan starts blowing on the radiator instead of on your engine, you will have overheating problems. The air will blow in from the front, then your fan will blow it right back out, and it will 'stall' the air on your radiator, instead of cycling it through), water pump going south, junk radiator, etc.
