I may be wrong (and I'm sure we'll find out if I am) but I have always thought of molding and a hard plastic or metal piece more for show and weatherstrip as a rubber type piece to seal the vehicle.

i recently replaced my windshield during the re-paint process but there is paint on my weather stripping now. thought it might be easier to replace than clean but now i'm starting to wonder

I took mine out before paint. I just wanted to check for rust.

Did you replace your windshield before paint or after.. im debating on what to do

mine was installed after the body work but before paint. you run risk of stratching the soft new paint if it's installed directly following a repaint. on the flip side it is "easier" to do the full repaint with the glass out so just see what your particular painter is more comfortable with. it can be done well either way really
