I have an s281 spoiler I am almost ready to install. I have been kicking aroung the idea of smoothing it into the trunklid and wondered if anyone else has done it?

been kickin the idea around, along with maybe modifying it a little bit. I think the front edge of it will look a little strange if it is blended in just because of the thickness of the lip. I have been considering reshaping it by cutting it down and then reglassing the shape to fit what I need. Ideally I would like it to look more like a ducktail the the 281.

just paint it and bolt it in. Home brew body work never looks good...

I kinda agree with Adder. I thought about making the pedelstils on my cobra wing shorter so it laid more flush with the decklid but then I just figured I would screw it up. If you are confident in your skills and can throw money away ( if it looks bad ) then I say do it. but that wing looks great left alone.

I have never technically done body work before, but I have done alot of fiberglassing and modifying othe stuff inside the car that I am not afraid to try it out and be confident that it should end upclose to what I wanted. I tried to load the pics here but for some reason it is not letting me and locking up when I try.

Here is my most recent project. I made a gauge pod for my a-pillar as well as for 2 gauges that sits on top of my steering column. The A-piller was made on top of the factory panel and is made of fiberglass, a pvc reducer and also has two pieces of edge -lit plexi seperated by a thin strip of brushed aluminum. The pod for the other two I had to approach differently because if I built it into the panel I would not have been able to put it and the gauge shroud back on so instead I made a hat(mickey mouse at that) that just rests on top of it. Both pieces were painted and cleard then wetsanded with 1k, 1.5, and 2k grits then polished to give you a surface you can comb your hair in.

Here about half way down you can see the kick panels I made as well as the clock pod I modified to fit my radar detector in it.

Originally I was going to keep the parts of the spoiler that extend forward and mount it to the lid but I am rethinking that now. I was going to keep them on there for the mounting that they have but I think it would look better to cut them off along with the front edge of the spoiler. Obviously if I am smoothing it to the lid I could just use some epoxy and then go from there. When I look at the back of the spoiler it is so well aligned up with the edge that to me it just seems like the perfect base to start from to make that ducktail spoiler so many of us have dreamed off. I think with out the mounting points going up that it would drastically change the shape of it to the point that it would be hard to tell what it came from. Obviously I would leave the edges that hang out over the fender. I would have the whole lid painted then as I don't have the equipment to do it the way I would like.
Dunno its not like I need anothe project on my mustang but I would like how unique it would be now when it seems everyone with a snive is buying the 281.

I've seen it done before but like everyone said, it looked a little awkward because of the thickness of the wing. If you do some real digging, you might be able to find it. Try and search for the ducktail thread and you might be able to get a lead from there. I'm too lazy or else I'd do it for you haha.

Scott is very capable of doing this, has an eye for immaculate detail and does great work. I'm sure if anyone can pull it off, it's you.

the thickness part is what occured to me would look strange especially with the two mounting arms that extend down.. Basically what I think I would do is cut the front edge of the spoiler off(including the mounting arms) up to about half way up the top of it. I would then fill that space with fiberglass so that rather then a lip on the front of it, it would just gradually slope down into the trunk lid to where it would look like part of the lid. Ideally I would want to make it hard to tell where the lid ends and the spoiler begins but with the slope down that might be harder to. The back end of that spoiler doesn't hang out all that far, I think with the gradual slope down that I will make and the sides still hanging off edge would look pretty cool. Worst cas scenario I will need to go to the junkyard and get a new trunklid and eat the $$$ on the spoiler if it doesn't look good.
