Shifter install questions

Installing a new shifter in my 98 Cobra and I have a few questions:

1. Do you put any grease in the shifter bushing/cup?

2. What is that ball looking thing attached to the exterior of the shifter housing?

The ball should be a vent in the side of the transmission. And yes, it won’t hurt to put a little grease in the cup.
