When in gear my shifter still has some play to it. For example, when I'm in, let's say, 3rd gear, I can still wobble the shifter around a little? Normal or something to worry about?

Normal for a stock 20YO shifter. I'm assuming it's a stocker.

Yea the stock shifter is a big rubber stick. I find aftermarket shifters forsale all the time around mustang centered classifieds. $50 is the going rate for most

As long as it's not falling out of gear, you should be fine. They're 20 year old mustangs. Nothing is gonna be perfect about them.

I thought you put a short shifter on in your build thread though?

I can tell you, my car never wiggled around in gear with my MGW, no more than say 1/8 to 1/4" of travel.

How much slop are you talking about here? It should not feel like an old VW bug where you can't find neutral because every gear you can move the shifter 6 inches side to side lol

Yeah my shifter feels like wet noodle in my 02 GT, going to swap it out for mgw eventually.

DO NOT get a cheap shifter because of price. Go with a name brand, even if its used.

Yeah I do have a short shifter on it. But I can differentiate between numeral and a gear lol

There is a small nylon cup in the transmission where the shifter "ball" interfaces with it. When it wears its good for a few mm of play in any direction.

Sounds like you got something worn out lol. I don't think even my stocker did that. What shifter did you get??

The econoshift isn't really a good piece. I helped a friend put one in his car and it literally fell apart. Has the play been there since the install or has it progressively gotten worse?

As long as that rubber bushing is in good shape or it will be crappy too. Did you verify the bolts that hold the handle (not the knob) to the shifter are tight enough? My pro-5.0 used to loosen up from time to time
