Silly question requires a simple answer

I replaced my struts, shocks and springs recently.

I noticed I didn't reattach the strut cover/protector very well on one of the front struts. I'm talking about that black plastic thing that keeps the strut from getting wet/dirty. Is it ok to go without that or is it recommended to leave them on and hence for me to reattach it? Problem is, I don't think I can fit my hand up there to screw that hose clamp back down around it!

Thanks.

I'll delete this thread once I get a couple answers since it's a dumb question.

Front struts right? I just wasn't sure if that chrome-looking part of the cylinder should be exposed to the elements. Anybody else?
