slight problem with my canton valve covers

Just went to install some canton valve covers and when I went to install the small baffle directly below the oil fill tube I realized that the supplied self tapping screws were way to small. Rather than even begin to cut into the pre-drilled holes they just slid all the way in.

I don't think I can tap them because there just isn't enough depth for a tap to make more than 2-3 good threads. Same with a larger self-tapping screw, the wholes just aren't deep enough.

Dunno, if I got a blem set of valve covers or they sent me the wrong screws or what. Really don't understand why the dang baffle wasn't already assembled anyways... frustrating. any recommendations.?

one other question while I'm at it. Does anybody have a picture of a lower manifold installed. or if you know off the top of your head. Which bolts go where. I've got two bolts with the extended threads that another nut threads down on top of. I know one is on the left side and the coolant hard lines attach to it... but can't for the life of me remember where the other one goes, and can't remember what attaches to it. I believe one of my buddies removed it which is why I can't remember where it came from.

While I was looking for an American supplier of die cast valve covers I wrote a couple emails to Canton, about 5 months apart, asking if their's were made in the USA. They never wrote back.

You may just be a victim of the type of quality control one can expect from Chinese products. I would contact Canton and see if they want to exchange your valve covers for ones with the correct sized holes.

you dont need baffles in your valve covers, in fact most people have to cut/modify there stock ones for
bigger roller rockers. i would leave them out and bolt them on.. as far as the studbolts, i just ran out to my car
and checked... as far as i can remember there is only one, and it is between cyl 4 and 3. (2nd bolt from back
on drivers side)

Depending on how tall the valve covers are and whether you have full roller rockers or not, you may not be able to install the baffles at all without them hitting the rockers. On the stockers I just coated, I had to remove the baffle and grind out the inside of the VC with a carbide burr.

That said, even if you could only get three threads - that would be plenty for a baffle. They're not load-bearing so you'd just need to be sure to loc-tite the crap out of them so the bolts don't back out. If you could find an appropriately sized bolt, you could just run a tap into the holes, and install some button-head screws.

As for the intake bolts - I can't remember and would need to look myself.

Paul.

I think that just answered that question for me, because there is a second one on the passenger side that the coolant hard lines bolt to. So this one that you are refering to must be where my other one goes. Would you happen to know what else attaches to this bolt?
