Hey guys just wanted to ask around before I go making massive repairs, I've heard this slight 1-2 second rattle is pretty normal for these 2v engines. Just curious if that's true or if I should just bite the bullet and do a timing kit. When I say slight I mean did you weren't listening for it you'd never notice.

A lot of start up noise is normal
Until the engine worms up
Oil is still in the bottom pan on start up

Could just be the tensioners and/or chains need replacing. The tensioners are oil fed after all, and the quick rattle before pressure builds is a normal and tolerable symptom of an age-related problem. Depends on how many total miles the engine has as well as the owner's time and money budget.

A lot of engines will do a slight, momentary rattle on cold start when they have not been started in a while. Takes a second or so for oil pressure to build and start flowing.

But there is a thing such as excessive cold start rattle. F150 3.5L phasers for example.

Ford changed to specified oil to help with this. If it is high mileage probably needs need chains and tensioners
