Smallest Alternator Pulley EVAR - need help

I bought this overdrive alternator pulley for the notch. It's tiny.

I have a problem, which is somewhat expected. Although the nut fits fine inside the pulley, the 1/2" drive 15/16" socket required to tighten said nut down does not. Would perhaps a 3/8" drive 15/16" socket (which I don't currently own) have a smaller outer diameter? Is a "low profile" fastener available that would have the same thread pitch but require perhaps a 3/4" socket?

Thoughts? Ideas?

How far off is the 1/2" drive 15/16" socket from fitting? I don't know if the 3/8" drive will be much of a difference (if any). I'm sure I have the 3/8"-15/16" socket. Let me go look and I'll get back to you.

Apparently the 3/8" drive socket grew legs and walked away.
Have you tried a 21 or 22mm?

According to my dial caliper, the ID of the pulley is 1.2545", and the OD of the 15/16" socket is 1.265" - so I'm only off about ten thousandths.

Anybody care to measure their various 15/16" sockets and tell me what the OD and manufacturer is?

i'm not at home now so i can't measure mine, but i think you use a 24mm socket. I have 3 different alternator pulleys, and my billet underdrive is actually larger than the other 2 steel ones.

Yeah, this is an OVERdrive pulley, so it's smaller than the OEM one by a significant margin. In fact, that OEM pulley is even smaller than the one that came on the alternator, so this thing is tiny compared to the original.

I'll see if I have any metric sockets that will fit the bill, but I think my large-diameter metric selection is a bit thin.

i think a thin-wall socket is your best bet.. but the metric equivalent, if not a thin-wall should fit the bill.

Chuck the socket in a lathe and take off a few thou...

My tool box has a few custom tools!

That's what I'm going to end up doing. A friend of mine has a lathe, and has actually had to do this before for the same application - so hopefully I can get one cut down this weekend.

+1, or just buy the cheesiest 10.99 set of tools you can find. But the lather will work for sure.

I would think they should supply a 12pt nut of some sort. I agree though, take it to a lathe/grinder....first time on the impact is probably going to blow it apart though

You would think that, wouldn't you? Nope.

I'm going to hand-tighten that nut as far as I can, then just give it a quick "whack" with the impact to hopefully keep it from asploding into a million pieces on the first try.

No worries, I'll post up some pics. I've friggin BURIED at work right now, so I've been working nights/weekends, but once that is over with I can get back to work and post pics of my progress.
