And I thought I knew a lot about Mustangs! You guys have shown me something I've never noticed on a Mustang before.

I guess there is a short piece of duct work in the rear quarter?? Surely there is. Don't need water getting in the interior there.

To convert a '98 to the vented type, do you remove the inner interior panel for access or what? Small vent in the wheelwell

resembles a piece on GM cars years ago for the "flow through ventilation" system.

Seeing how most car manufacturers cheepen things on cars as a cost savings and the vents being somewhat ineffective, I'm

not too suprized they were dropped. I like the '94-'95 two tone interior door panels too.

Can't believe I never noticed these before.

funny you should ask, ive been planning on doing this for awhile, and finally got around to doing it yesterday. here are some pics.

basically yes, you have to remove the rear seats (top and bottom) to remove the side panels which will give you access to the nuts for the sidescoops. i removed all the interior because.....well really i have no idea. i was only going to install a radio and i got a little carried away. a simple radio install turned into this:

but on to the more import pics.

here you can see what the car looks like w/o the rear seats.

the nuts to the vents are hidden behind this:

see that rubber grommet next to that one connector in the pic above? the 3rd nut for the scoop is hidden beind that:

this is what the factory, non fuctional one looks like:

what i did, since i didnt want to create/make my own duct work, is that i bought a set of functional sidescoops from a member on here (its been so long since i did that, i cant even remember who i bought them from). basically, all i did was swap over the "caps" from my original ones with the duct work on the functional ones. its really easy, it just consisted of 3 tabs that have to be lifted.

pre-swap:

and now all you would have to do is drill the holes for the vents to work. i got a bottle of oil i had in the trunk, oiled the duct, and installed it. this left a mark on the inside of the fender so i knew where i had to drill. i used a 1/2" cobalt drill bit, (cobalt works great for cutting thru metal). i removed the wheels and drilled from there. i tried w/o removing the wheel and drilling from the sidescoop opening, but when i came close to drilling a 1/2" hole in the tire, i decided it was best to remove the wheel.

here is what it looks like from the front of the car. see that oil? that gave me the guide as to where to drill.:

and from the wheel well. the oil on this side is WD-40, i used it to keep the drill bit cool/lubricated and thus making it so much easier to drill.:

and here is the finished product, clearly functional now:

My 96 GT has vents on both sides that work. Though I don't see it being all that functional really since it doesn't shoot right at the brakes.

we went over this lol

it cools the air around the wheelwell which is where the air that goes by the brakes comes from. so inturn by cooling the whole wheel well it also cools the brakes. see where i'm going with this?

Thats all grave, but whats the point of the front brakes do most of the work and they have nothing helping them cool down. I have drilled and slotted rotars. I suppose that helps, and I've thankfully never experienced brake fad. Well, not in many years.

actually, the front brakes do have a lil something to help route air towards them. not exactly effective, but they do. next time you get under your car, look at the wheel well, and you will notice a plastic trim piece that comes from the front of the car. that actually does help route air into the wheel well.

and as far as the front brakes doing most of the work.....yeah, its true, but everyone who says "oh, the rear brakes dont do much" under estimate the actual amount of work the rear brakes do.
