am still confused why you would not want to copy the piece that was there. You can always use it for randome storage rather then just a piece of foam. Not sure why anyone would want to buy it but if that is what you want just go get some expanding foam from home depot...

Anything with enough strength to support the weight of groceries/random things that get tossed in the trunk is going to add weight itself. The whole point of taking out the spare is weight reduction. IF I were to use a metal or acrylic copy of the cardboard piece already in there, it would have to be mounted in a way that it wouldn't slide around. Which would defeat the purpose of using it to keep the empty space open. A form fitted piece of foam will be very light weight and will support any trunk cargo without any fabrication. Think of it as a "no hardware required" installation. If I ever need to put the spare back in, all I have to do is swap the two out. So with the points of 1. Price, 2. Weight, and 3. Ease of Install , this is the best option for me and possibly others.

Why not my idea of lining the hole in carpet? Remove the carpet mat, cardboard piece, and whatever else. Spray some glue down and work some carpet over the whole thing. Spare still fits just fine if you feel the need to throw it in there and you don't have to worry with a hunk of foam. Not saying you have to, just wondering why you wouldn't want to do that.

Well for one, the battery box is bolted down in the trunk, so I would have to drop the gas tank just to pull out the box to get the oem carpet out. Im more of the type to keep it factory "clean" if possible without changing too much.

I like your idea. I considered removing all the stuff and spraying with bedliner but I drive my car to work some days and need my spare and jack handy. I think it would look good carpeted.

Understood. I wasn't knocking you or anything, just curious.

Oh I know you weren't. Sorry if it came off like I was offended! As I always say when it comes to cars... To each his own. Your idea definitely has some pro's to it. If I ever made it a 100% track car, I would most likely go with your idea.
