For some reason my vehicle speed sensor in my 94 GT is leaking. It has the 5 speed transmission. (Tremec brand T-5, correct?)

Anyway, the thing is, the speedometer is working fine but the sensor seems to be leaking. There is no fluid anywhere around the hole in the trans, the only fluid anywhere is just running down the sensor and the wire to it. So its gotta be the sensor.

So I pulled it out and its this one, but not motorcraft brand.

The O-ring LOOKS ok, but I guess you never know. Is that the only part of this thing capable of holding in fluid? Could anything else on there be causing it to leak? Since the sensor itself still works, should I just try to get a new O-ring or should I just buy a new sensor? Never replaced one before so I don't know all the ins and outs of the repair.

Oh and I recently changed the tranny fluid but I just filled it up to the hole in the side and let it start run out of the hole. That's how you know its full. Supposedly. And I don't know how much fluid pressure these things build, if any, so I'm not sure if some kind of overfilling could be causing this.

it's probable the O-ring. As the o ring ages it gets flat and hard and doesn't seal anymore.
It will probably break into pieces if you try to remove it.

I removed it and its still rubbery. Although, it does look like some of the sides of it are a little flattened. I went to Autozone, Napa, Orielly's, and then finally Tractor Supply to find one that was similar. Its a lot fatter though. Hopefully it fits. If not, this is probably going to be one of those scenarios where you have to buy a whole new part just to replace a tiny part of it that failed. Cause the speedo sensor works just fine and a new motorcraft one is about $30. Don't you just love that.

New experimental O-ring don't fit. At least I was able to get a new Motorcraft sensor off ebay for $20 shipped. Guess at least I can take solace in the fact that my vehicle speed sensor won't be going out for a while. Till it needs a new O-ring. lol

You can buy those little gears that go on the ends all day long but not the o ring
