I'm getting my ford racing 3.73's and I need to know what gears I need to run for the speedo. So far I've come up with a 7 and 21 tooth combo. Question is what gear is in the tranny? A 7 or 8 tooth. Also how difficult is it to pull the extension housing to change the internal gear if need be?

Having the same question, just got my car back fresh from the shop with 3.73s and brand new aode tranny with will heavy duty high proformace clutches, new valve body, 2500 stall converter, big servos and a stage 2 shift kit. I know we could fix our problem with the speedcal, but id rather not spend $150 bucks to fix the speedo.

I actually pulled my sensor off and looked in the extension housing. My gear inside is a yellow gear which is a 7 tooth so I can just get the red 21 tooth. Which is awesome.

That is correct. The speedo will be 100% accurate. For others who do not have an AODE the 21 tooth gear won't be accurate on the 5 speed.

if its a factory 94-95 T5, then it is a 8 tooth gear. regardless of what color you thought it was when looking through the hole.

I know what color it is. Yellow. I don't however know wether it's a factory tranny. I spoke with ford they said the 2.73 models all had a yellow or colorless gear which are both 7 tooth designs. He also stated that the 8 tooth gears are brown and green. So I'm solely operating on that info.

and the 8 tooth gear was installed in every ford mustang t5 since 90.

While we are on the subject, what color is the gear on the speed sensor.

Yeah that's what I've seen on the net. The tranny could be pre 90 but who knows. The one on the sensor was yellow.

see, now we are getting somewhere.

You say your car has 2.73 gears.

If your car had the Yellow, 7 tooth drive gear, then the gear on the end of your sensor would be wine colored.

Your car has a green, 8 tooth drive gear, same as mine did. I specifically recall thinking that my gear was yellow as well. After I put the speedo recall gear on the VSS i saw that my speedo was WAY off. When i pulled the transmission apart, sure as SH*T... it was an 8T drive gear.

BTW, here is the Ford Racing chart.

the hardest part about taking the transmission apart is getting the roll pin out of the piece that the shifter sits into. when I disassembled my trans, I found it easiest to actually sit the bellhousing on the floor, and drop the trans down into it. then use it as a vertical work station.

Don't lose any bolt, and make sure the surfaces are clean and dry before you try to put it back together. Use black RTV on the case halves when putting it back together.
