Stock traction lok

Is it worth rebuilding the oem traction-lok. I hear that once you burnout, you fry the frictions, is this true? I would think, that if it was rebuilt correctly, nothing should happen to it as long as it properly broken in...? :dontknow:

Also, west coast diff said there is a better way to stack the steels and frictions, to make it more agressive. Anybody try this?

I'm about to start the rebuild process tomorrow. I have in my posession so far, Ford 3.73 Ring and Pinion with the crush sleeve, ring gear and pinion gear grade 8 bolts. A master rebuild kit with shims, bearings, meshing paint and a TA Girdle. I plan on purchasing wheel bearings, seals, and a traction lok rebuild kit. Not sure whether to get carbon plates or oem? I'm excited. I have 2 buddies and some very knowledgable intructors that will be overseeing it and I will have till thursday to do it. I wish I could take pictures but no cameras are allowed at school. :angry7:
Oh! should I use 100% silicon or the composite gasket that came with the girdle? Thanks Guys!

I have seen a stock traction Lok go in the 10's before without issue. Since you are re-doing the entire rear pretty much I don't see why you shouldn't re-build the differential. Now I would go with the carbon plates, hands down.

Now as far as stacking to make it stronger....you can put one extra clutch on each side.

So I got my car on a lift today. The very first lug nut I hit was seized.

After getting all of the other lug nuts off, I went back to the one that left me with an a feeling like the job would be cursed because it was the first damn thing I touched! Anyways, I grabbed my breaker bar, snapped it off, hit the stud through with a hammer, and then started pulling the diff cover off to drain the fluid. Once the fluid came to a drip, I pulled the last bolt in the top and removed the cover to reveal 3.73 stamped on the ring and pinion, and all I said was, damn.

I counted the 41 teeth on the ring gear, and 11 teeth on the pinion, did the math and ya, 3.727273. So i now have a a brand new ring and pinion that I never needed, and since somebody else has already done it, I decided to not to pull else out except the axles to replace the seals and bearings.

Everything looked like it was meshing nice, but I did not take measurements because I figured I will fix all that if needed on the rebuild. I spent the rest of the day getting the C clips on the axles off (boy these were fun). Finally we figured it out, using 2 picks and my buddy with a hammer, tapping on the other end of the axle. The last thing I got accomplished was putting in the new stud, I grinded part of the head so I could clear the abs reluctor wheel.

So that's where I'm at, it's been fun, how did I do? I will have to get back to it on monday and finish pulling the axle seals and bearings. I might be able to take some pictures then too!

well atleast you saved youself some money. I would go ahead an rebuild it or atleast check it out. When mine was done i found out both my rear wheels were still spinning because the clutches had welded themselves together.LOL have fun

I just found a Richmond Powertrax for 200 locally. I was reading up on these and did a search and sure enough I found one for well over half off. I'm gonna try it out, while I rebuild the traction lok. I should have it all together by the end of tomorrow. Wish me luck!

baloney. donuts will burn it out after time but not regular burn outs.
