Ok, so this is how it started. I finished my motor and installed a refreshed T5 (new synchros and 2nd gear) and the car ran great with no noises or anything for about 3-4 days. 2 days ago it started making a squealing type of noise from the tranny/ back of the engine area, so i think throwout bearing. I replaced that yesterday ($34 oreileys, not a cheap one), and it already has a new pilot bearing and main seal. those are the only things i can think it'd be, but they are all new and quality. whats does everyone think. The noise happens randomly, usually once the motor has warmed for 5 mins or so. It then will make it at variuous RPM's and speeds, and in different gears.

when i shut the motor off it coninues making the noise for a second or two

Also, performance has not changed with the car since the noise started, as in nothing FEELS different

I am completely stumped and don't know what to do other than drive to my tranny guy on monday 2 hours away

PLEASE HELP

Re: Strange Sound -- *Please HELP* [video]

i think its the tranny also, becasue pressing the clutch, or basically going anything doesnt make the noise go away, but ******* son of a ****** thats sucks! i just got it done and now i have to drive it for 2 hours to the tranny guy that did the work with the car making that noise

Re: Strange Sound -- *Please HELP* [video]

haha.. that actually kinda funny cause my TKO does the EXACT same thing.. i knew it
from when you were describing it.. it is the throwout bearing (or at least in my case)
i got my TKO installed summer 06' and it started doing that about 6 months ago.
i looked at it with a couple ASE mechanics and they said throwout bearing, even though
it's not doing the "typical" things... quit with clutch in... etc. hope it helps!

Re: Strange Sound -- *Please HELP* [video]

just because the part is brand new doesn't mean it is working properly.
thats why parts have warranties. who knows... maybe the techs. i talked to are
wrong, and it is something else... but thats what they said..

Re: Strange Sound -- *Please HELP* [video]

how did the input shaft of the tranny look (the part that the t/o bearing slides back and forth on)?? That or just a bad t/o bearing, even though it is new. Just my .02

Re: Strange Sound -- *Please HELP* [video]

this is the thing. The new throwout bearing i had on the tranny (only 3500 miles) was removed for anther, higher quality throwout bearing. so, imo, its very unlikely i got 2 bad brand new throwout bearings

even though it sounds to be coming from under the car, i'm thinking it could have something to do with the valve adjustment. i'm going to pull the upper intake and valve covers tomorrow, re-adjust everything and see where i'm at.

Does it make the same noise with the clutch in/clutch out? It doesn't sound like the noise changes pitch with RPM, does it? Does it do it in neutral, as well as in gear? There are all things that would help to know.

When you replaced the TOB, did you inspect the backside of the flywheel and the inspection plate for any evidence of contact?

Paul.

yes, the noise does not change with the clutch in or out. The noise does not change pitch with rpms, and yes, it does it in neutral, in gear, in gear with clutch disengaged, full throttle, part throttle ect once its warmed up.

when i replaced my TOB, i just took the tranny out, not the bell housing or clutch, so i couldnt inspect anything.

heres how it goes when i start her in the morning

start and let it warm for a min or 2. start driving. about 5-7 min into the drive it will start to faintly make the noise. within the next min of it first making the noise, the noise increases a lot, no according to rpms or antyhing, it just randomly gets louder, and will randomly stop and start again. somtimes if it idles long enough it will stop all together, but will make a small chirp every 30 sec to 1min or so.

its inconsistancy is whats confusing me so much

Re: Strange Sound -- *Please HELP* [video]

I would remove the transmission and start the car. See if it makes the noise. Then remove the clutch and start the car. See if it makes the noise. That might at least help narrow it down.

Re: Strange Sound -- *Please HELP* [video]

that exactly what my dad said to do

first we are going to re-adjust the valves. i downloaded trick flows directions which i didnt do before, so we are going to re-adjust everything according to trick flow specs. then, if the sound is still there, we are going to removed the tranny, then clutch, and just slowly narrow it down.

thnaks for the help

Re: Strange Sound -- *Please HELP* [video]

I have heard this noise before but I can't remember what it was. It was long ago.

It sounds like something small, without a lot of mass in order to achieve that pitch of sound. The thing that comes to mind is something like a bearing in an alternator or an air pump. Ahh.......hhhmmm.....air pump seems familiar for some reason. Take the belt off and start the engine after it is warm and see if the sound goes away. Start with simpler solutions first.

Re: Strange Sound -- *Please HELP* [video]

Good point Steve. A seized air pump or A/C compressor could conceivably make a noise like that - but wouldn't it change pitch according to RPM?

thats what i thought also, it would change the pitch. I am going to try that though after work. That would be the easiest first step.

I first thought the problem was the belt slipping, so i bought a Nascar gatorbakc belt, but problem not solved.

hopefully i can start diagnosing the situation around 5 today

Re: Strange Sound -- *Please HELP* [video]

have you tried adjusting the clutch at all. just because it sqeaks doesnt mean its bad yet. if you dont have a firewall adjuster then i highly recommend getting one to fine tune the clutch adjustment. thats what it sounds like to me.
