Maybe you have bad JuJu, and you are the only unlucky SOB that gets 2 bad TO bearings in a row

up at work, we installed 3 starters from 2 diff. parts stores on the same car within a week because we had bad
parts.. it could happen. the TO bearing is what i was told when i looked into my noise.. and so
far every other suggestion has been declined.
BTW: this should be made a sticky for the on-going trouble-shooting... haha j/k

Problem Solved

It was the REAR MAIN SEAL! It was a brand new Felpro from Autozone, and was installed perfectly fine.

I bought a new one from O'Rileys made by National that cost twice as much as the Felpro ($11 to $22).

I ran the car for a long time with the trannt on, then off, and the noise still happened, so out came the main seal. after we replaced it, we ran the motor again until operating temp with the tranny off, and no noise. I was so releived.

so, moral of this story, DO NOT buy Felpro main seals from Autozone!

Good point Steve. A seized air pump or A/C compressor could conceivably make a noise like that - but wouldn't it change pitch according to RPM?

First, I read the problem is solved. Whew!! That was a bugger.

Paul, I wasn't thinking seized as much as I was thinking just wiped out (sloppy). Perhaps a floating race that is spinning in it's seating area. As for the pitch changing, if you listen closely you can hear a change in the speed of the pulsation of the sound. I grew up around audio equipment and have a musical ear so I pick up on some real subtlties. The pitch of the sound doesn't change but the speed of the pulsation does. Since the problem was found to be related to the rear main seal the vibration of the crankshaft would account for this.

Also I said it sounded like something small. This is a result of how narrow the rear main is, not a whole lot of surface area.

As for the sound continuing for a second or two after the engine is shut off, the engine does not instantly come to a stop when it is shut off. It coasts to a stop because there is nothing to stop it's inertia except for cylinder compression, and air can be compressed.

Congrats on getting it fixed. These kinds of things drive me nuts!!!
