Ok, so my transmission decided to call it quits officially. It's been slowly dieing but yesterday it started freezing up as it blew transmission fluid all over my exhaust and gave me some 007 fun :tongue3: Anyways, today my dad and I pulled it out and we're looking to do a rebuild on it. I've read a lot into it on the threads and everyone says either TKO500, 3550, T56, or Astro. I'd love to have one of these really good ones, but money is an issue as we're also replacing the clutch. I'm really not overly hard on it, no powershifting, ramming shifts or anything like that. I do run the car fairly spirited, but I don't drag race, soon to be autocrossing though. No poweradders, no H/C/I, just a stock daily driver that I want to handle well and shift decent. If I do just rebuild the stock t-5 is there anything between Astro and bone-stock? Any upgraded parts that I won't spend a fortune on? Anyways, thanks for whatever info you guys give me if any :book1: Oh, and here's a couple pictures haha.

If anyone's thinking about removing these.. don't worry, they're light and easy to remove. I still have the fluid in it in this picture.

How bad does this look? It doesn't feel too great, and slips under hard load in 3 etc.

The flywheel.. are those hotspots or something? The flywheel was kinda wavy feeling.

I'm guessing this is the pilot bearing? Also, is there a replaceable bearing retainer around it and should it be replaced if nicked?

Sorry for all the questions.

Re: T-5's suck.

Missing shifts and bag driving any tranny will destroy it :p. I had mine rebuilt with Astro T5 parts and it's been solid so far. A few full throttle runs from 1st-4th(0-110mph) and its been fine. I'll let you know how it does at the track next month :p.

Re: T-5's suck.

I'm not really hard on it, I'm not a great shifter per say, but I try to shift smooth. No dropping the clutch and all that crap either. And about the Astro... how expensive is that compared to a normal rebuild? I'd love to have one but I don't want to spend 2000 bucks on one if a normal rebuild will last 150,000 the way I drive it.

Internals where $550 I believe(minus output shaft) and bearing/synchro kit from Ford racing was $220 or something like that, so around $800 in parts and about $400 in labour for everything...

Gah.. there's too many options. The one sleepn sn95 put up is a good price but it only says 250ft/lbs and stock is supposed to be 300. That doesn't make sense that a rebuilt one would hold less. Oh, and Javi, where are you located?

if money is an issue go ahead and forget the tkos and t-56s. just rebuild yours or get a good working used one from someone you can trust.

Re: T-5's suck.

Javi is in Oka.

I don't see what the problem with your T5 in, sure it blew up, but how many miles were on it? Anyhow, when you get into Tremecs you run into needing another shifter and driveshaft, crossmember, etc etc... And quite frankly, your car doesn't make enough power to hurt a T5.

I say get another stock T5 and run it, it only takes about an hour to pull one anyway.

Yeah, Javi is a friend of mine, so I'm biased, but your T5 really didn't break because it sucked, because they don't suck. I'd buy his too, put a new clutch on it and run it.

Re: T-5's suck.

I'd be more tempted to get Javi's if he was close by, but I think we've decided on getting it rebuilt by a good local guy. I've also ordered a new CF DF clutch along with a MGW shifter.. should feel like new. And yes, I know that I don't need a tko or t-56 at this point and that's why I ruled that out. The tranny had 130,000 miles on it, only 15,000 that I personally put on it. When I got it the 4th gear synchro was already going bad, just as a testament to it's earlier life. I really don't beat on it, I hate when people abuse their cars.

Also a good idea, a rebuild should run you about 400 bucks, and you already own it, so you know it bolts in.

That's the main reason we're rebuilding it.. we know it should be an easy install. One question though.. how do you remove the pilot bearing? And is there a retainer around it that needs removed also?

Re: T-5's suck.

There's no retainer, theres a tool for it like a slide hammer, or you can cram some grease in there and get a punch that fits inside the pilot bearing and wham the punch with a hammer, which will force the grease behind the pilot bearing and shoot it out, if you followed that.

Re: T-5's suck.

Alright cool, thanks. We have a big slide hammer, we just need to fab up a small hook to get behind it. While we're on the subject, is all I NEED is a pilot bearing and throwout bearing along with the clutch kit? I've heard not to use the bearings that come with the kits.

Good, thanks J.R. Sometimes it's hard to get straight answers on all of this stuff.

Re: T-5's suck.

130k miles and you think it sucks? That's pretty good for a T5, especially in a Mustang :p. Mine lasted 224000kms(roughly 138k miles) before rebuilding and it wasn't that bad, but all sychros were getting worn out sadly. Rebuild it, put an aftermarket shifter on and you'll be happy, I'm very pleased with mine. Isn't as silky as my brothers newer stang, but I don't expect it to be, completely different set ups lol.
