New to the forum here, just purchased a 1994 forest green gt 5 speed, my concern with the car is the t5 is having a common problem of some whining from 1-3 gear it's nothing ridiculously loud but is noticeable, The previous owner claims to have changed the fluid in the trans with dex II(which idk how is possible since it isn't made anymore) but ill be changing it this weekend to RP ATF this weekend, my question is has anyone with a similar problem found out the root cause of the whine? Is it the input shaft bearing? Is it the countershaft bearings? I've gotten very mixed answer from my searches and was just wondering if anyone had first hand found and fixed the problem.

thanks!

Does it have a short throw shifter? those will cause a whine because they dont have the rubber isolators in them

It does have a short throw but it was making the whine before I had installed it, it wasn't as noticeable but it was still there

I had the T5 whine after I installed a short shifter. I then installed CobraBob's shifter gasket plus AMSOIL ATF and it went away.

Alright, ill see if the fluid change this weekend makes any difference, I mean is it typical for these trans to have a slight whine to them?

Hard to tell with noise on a t5. They just make horrible sounds.

Best you can do is change fluid. Make sure is properly bolted in and not rubbing something causing a vibration/noise. You can open it up and inspect it if you really want to. But other then that, they're just noisy.

Mine is pretty whiney. I think it fairly normal. Just save money and drive it til it dies or you need something better.
