Tensioner Questions

I have been throwing belts like crazy, three in fact on Saturday. I made sure all of the pulleys were aligned and I just put a new tensioner on it and there is no tension on the belt. All pulleys spin freely. I have a 90.5" belt bypassing the smog pump, but I noticed the tensioner moves a lot when the car is running and it hits the stop constantly. My question is, it should not hit the stop right? I tried a 90" belt and it was to short. I thought I read here that someone used a 90.2. If so, where did you find it? Even though, it does not explain why I have been throwing stock belts. Any ideas?

no, it shouldn't hit the stop. the autoparts store should be able to get you the belt by length. it might help if you put the belt over the WP pulley last since the belt doesn't have to be IN the grooves of the pulley.

You can "notch" the stop on the tensioner for about another 1/8th of travel. I did it on my car before. However, if you can get the 1/2" shorter belt to the point where it is just about on and have someone "bump" the start, you can get the belt on. Its like putting the chain back on your bike when you're a kid. Just watch your fingers incase that bitch fires up.

90 was tight at first but it made it. New for tensioner and pulleys and it had no noise. Now running a 89" for my march underdrives though

I am done with the short belt thing. None of them fit and I am tired of destroying them. Ordered an eliminator kit for it and just gonna run the stock belt until I get new pulleys. Anybody have charging issues with under drives? Just know on my 89 the volts fluxuate even with a bigger alternator.
