testing shocks?

how do i test shocks to make sure they are functioning correctly? ive seen people pres them down by hand, but i forget how to tell if they are good or not... is it the faster it goes the worse they are? or... something like that? i forget

push down on the car, if it takes more than one bounce to recover you probably need new ones.

they are out of the car, i bought them off the classified section

no leaking fluid.... they are firm to depress and rebound slowly.

sounds about right, they should rebound smoothly and at the same speed as the other one. i bought a set of 90/10s that you could push in and then the suckers wouldn't come back out w/o pulling them w/ a vise grip, the guy had cleaned them up super good and i didn't think to check them when i bought them, i was afraid to put them on the car and have it become a death trap.
