testing shocks?

how do i test shocks to make sure they are functioning correctly? ive seen people pres them down by hand, but i forget how to tell if they are good or not... is it the faster it goes the worse they are? or... something like that? i forget :)

they are out of the car, i bought them off the classified section :)

no leaking fluid.... they are firm to depress and rebound slowly.

sounds about right, they should rebound smoothly and at the same speed as the other one. i bought a set of 90/10s that you could push in and then the suckers wouldn't come back out w/o pulling them w/ a vise grip, the guy had cleaned them up super good and i didn't think to check them when i bought them, i was afraid to put them on the car and have it become a death trap.
