Thermostat Housing Leak

[New 5.0]

I recently replaced my thermostat and now I have a leak coming from the housing. This is actually the second time this happens. I?m not sure if I?m sealing it wrong or just putting on to much sealant. :dontknow: Can anyone share some tips?

yea ive tried to use a little silicon before with the gasket and it caused a leak. Make sure you have no sealant on there, make sure bothe mating surfaces are clean. If that dosen't do it try a new gasket.

Are you sure the thermo is not slipping down between the flanges when you bolt it up? I did that the first time i changed mine. Also make sure the pin hole is at the 12 O'clock position.

Do you have a vice? Put the T-stat housing in a vice with the part that attaches to the block facing up. the put silicone on the gasket and a couple dabs on the edge of the T-stat. Set them in place and let them dry. After that put some silicone on the other side of the gasket. Then proceed with the rest of the reinstal. That makes it a bit easier to get the T-stat to line up good.

I would ditch that, and if you still want some bling, just polish a stock thermo-housing. Looks good, and functions
better than the aftermarket add on stuff.

I don't think you will ever get the chrome one to seal properly. Chrome doesn't like heat from what i've read. I bet you that the face is the housing isn't flat and straight.

mine sealed fine. I actually had more problems with the original than the chrome

I had problems with both I have been trying to find a Stock one to polish up and replace the chrome one i put on as a temp solution. I had to have my car running.

I bought one of those chrome ones and it leaked round about where the neck was, no signs of a crack just a crap casting.

I have had lots of problems with the chrome ones, I went with the factory one, and have had no problems. I put blue silicone sealer on both sides of the gasket, some on the edges of the thermostat, put it together so it sorta oozes out, let it sit overnight, and tighten the bolts down tight. no leaks yet!!!

I would do the stock ford housing if I was you, and polish the parts you see.

i just used high temp red silicone on mine. It doesnt need a lot just enought to stick the gasket.

finally got the damn thing to seal. looks like the thermostat sliped and didn't allow the housing to seal correctly

I usually seal the stat in the housing and don't put any sealant on the gasket. 15,000+ miles with that method on 2 different cars and I have never had a problem.
