Hey all,

The front speakers in my 98 are really starting to rattle. From what i've read there is some sort of plastic cap or seal that has come loose. I've also read you can't reseal it and it's best to just replace the speakers. Does that sound right?

So assuming I can't take the door off and glue, or some how reset the fronts it's time for new ones.

Looks like you need to put components in ?

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_575R152S/Rockford-Fosgate-Prime-R152-S.html I was thinking something about like this?

It says it needs a bracket to fit, I take it that isn't a big deal at all? it will still fit where the speaker goes right?

the vapor barrier is not a big deal and even if its gone doesn't hurt much. If you have replaced the deck you can slap almost any set of speakers into the car you want with only a minor wire-trick to bypass the stock amp. If you are going to put round speakers in the 5 x 7 opening and make a baffle you can fit 6.5" speakers if you can afford the extra money. If the stock deck is still in the car though it will make things much harder....

I did Infinity Kappa components in my doors. At first had them running off my aftermarket deck power then later added an amplifier. Hate to admit everyone who told me they needed power were right, I redid all the wiring and added the amplifier and it sounds 500% better

I have a low end but new jvc in there currently.

Wouldn't I want to use the amp? I'm a noob at this sort of stuff.

are 6.5inch speakers that much better?

no the stock amps will not help you after you replace a 5 x 7" woofer with a full range driver. They are not much better then what you will have in the jvc anyway.

Would I want to get a component speaker, like the link in the OP, to replicate the original sound. Or would I be better served getting a full range speaker and bypassing the amp? If I get a full range speaker for the front but leave the back the same will it sound alright? Any lower price speaker you guys recommend?

Right now it's pretty loud in the car volume wise, I'd prefer to keep the volume up especially with the top down, even if it sacrifices some of the "quality of sound"

I okay with the current set up, not that I wouldn't like it to be "better" but if I can just buy $100 component speakers and replace the tweeters and the door speakers without having to mess with amps or wiring, that'd be ideal.

Thank you so so so much for taking the time to clue me in, it's very appreciated.

even if you go with a componant you will need to bypass the amp. ford/jbl used speakers with strange impedences so that the amps will not play with regular speakers for very long. With that being said componants will be more work to mount the speaker, the tweeter and the cross overs and honestly the sail panels where the stock tweeters are located are a horrible location for a speaker sq wise since it puts one tweeter 4 ft from your ear and the other 8 ft away. It will be easier work to go with a full range coax speaker then componants and there is not much to gain from using the stock locations.

This is link I was going to provide as well.

To OP: It's entirely possible to install a component system in all the factory locations. You will just want to run new wires. It's time consuming, but the factory amps aren't all that great, and only power the woofers The tweeters are powered from the headunit. So a component system isn't exactly plug and play. I would head to eBay or a pawn shop and pick up a nice four channel amp for less than $100 and get some Infinity Reference or Kappas. This is a great time to overhaul. Do it once and be done.

that might work but honestly going through the trouble of trying to keep the stock, nearly 20 yr old amps is just not a great idea. We have had alot of people having battery drain problems from them leaving the car dead and as we have said they are not all that great sounding just compaired to even what an aftermarket deck can put out.

There NO reason to run new wires anywhere in the car short of power/rca if you install an amp. You will not gain any sound quality from it and there is stock wire already there.

A bit of a late comment, but TTOCS do you know which wires to bypass and where?

yes I know where/how to do it but if you are wanting specific wire colors - no. Its as simple as using a hrns that is right next too the deck already and then using the speaker wires that feed the tweeters, instead of the wires for the woofers in the doors.
